JOB OVERVIEW

The Senior Maintenance Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability, compliance, and operational excellence of Teknova’s biotech manufacturing and laboratory facilities. This position performs preventive and corrective maintenance (PM/CM) on complex building systems, clean utilities, and equipment within both GMP and non-GMP environments.


The ideal candidate is a hands-on technician who thrives on solving problems, mentoring peers, and delivering exceptional customer service. This role requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to manage work orders from initiation to closure using digital tools such as ticketing systems, and procurement platforms.

Requirements

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs PM, repairs, and troubleshooting on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems including, but not limited to: HVAC and exhaust systems, Boilers, chillers, compressors, autoclaves, Clean utilities (RO/DI, pure steam), Compressed gases, vacuum, pumps, motors, lighting, and general building infrastructure.
  • Execute maintenance work following SOPs, GMP documentation standards, and equipment-specific job plans.
  • Perform facility rounds and inspections, documenting performance trends and noting early signs of equipment degradation.
  • Maintain housekeeping and safe working conditions throughout maintenance activities.
  • Serve as a front-line representative for Facilities—responding to requests promptly, professionally, and with a customer-first mindset.
  • Communicate clearly and proactively with requestors, providing updates, estimated times for key steps, and closure confirmations.
  • Follow up with internal clients to verify issue resolution and maintain high service satisfaction.
  • Escalate critical equipment failures or environmental alarms immediately to appropriate leadership and stakeholders.
  • Manage daily workload through the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) (e.g., Blue Mountain, Maximo, Fresh Desk).
  • Accurately log work performed, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and parts used.
  • Close out work orders in a timely manner with complete, auditable documentation.
  • Interface with service vendors for scheduled PM, repairs, or emergency response.
  • If work requires a third party vendor: source vendors, obtain quotes and submit for approval. Verify completion of contracted services.
  • Maintain minimum stock levels of critical spare parts.
  • Support procurement activities such as: Identify parts and materials needed for PM/CM work, submit purchase requisitions and track order status.
  • Use Building Management Systems (BMS) to monitor and respond to alarms, trends, and environmental conditions.
  • Generate and distribute daily maintenance or alarm reports to stakeholders.
  • Send email updates, meeting recaps, and vendor communications to key stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Maintain spreadsheets, logs, and shared trackers related to maintenance schedules and vendor visits.
  • Utilize tablets, laptops, and mobile devices for digital workflows and remote collaboration.


EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Technical or trade school certification preferred.


KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / EXPERIENCE

  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License with a clean record
  • May be required to pass forklift certification depending on assignment
  • 2 – 4 years of related experience, such as in facilities, maintenance, or engineering experience with mechanical / electrical systems, HVAC, boilers, chillers, compressors, RO/DI/WFI systems, pumps and motors in biotech, pharmaceutical, or medical device industries preferred
  • Working knowledge of BMS and CMMS platforms preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret piping instrumentation diagrams, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and SOPs.
  • Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office, Outlook, Teams, Excel, SharePoint).
  • Comfort using tablets, scanners, and cloud-based maintenance software.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and time management abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple work orders, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • Customer service mindset—professional, patient, and responsive to all departments.
  • Collaborative, proactive, and solution-oriented.
  • Must have a valid California Drivers License with clean record. 
  • Required to obtain forklift training certification within 1 month of hire. 
  • Must be able to walk, bend, carry, lift, push and pull up to 45 pounds.
