At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica (SMBGC), we’re dedicated to turning this vision into reality, providing transformative experiences that help youth discover their strengths and achieve their dreams.
Our Youth Development Professionals (YDPs) are educators, coaches, mentors, community leaders, and ambassadors. As highly visible, active, and engaged staff, YDPs lead after school programming, in an outdoor or playground club environment, rooting program in SEL and play-based activities. YDPs support not only engaging programming but have an opportunity to support outreach and engagement for their school community, while connecting with parents.
Essential Functions of the Position
- Lead after school activities around play, character and leadership, healthy lifestyles, and age-appropriate workforce development exploration for elementary youth. Guide a sense of fun, exploration, and teamwork.
- Create positive and supportive relationships with elementary students.
- Assure youth are safe and engaged in activities. This includes following all safety requirements for Boys & Girls Clubs such as adhering to check-in-out procedures, active engagement during programming, and active monitoring of programming spaces.
- Facilitate Boys & Girls Clubs activities and curriculum in a trauma-informed, inclusive, and engaging environment.
- Provide positive mentorship, coaching, and role modeling to youth
- Support activities for all day camps and school breaks on special holidays, spring break, and summer program. Support SMBGC youth field trips, ensuring a fun and safe environment while in community.
Qualifications for the Ideal Candidate
- Demonstrated experience working in the youth development field, specifically with elementary aged youth.
- Good character, integrity and adaptability. Must lead with good judgement, be able to set healthy boundaries, illustrate patience, and emotional intelligence.
- Experience working with diverse populations and communities and know how to build an inclusive environment for youth.
- Good communications skills, and the willingness to learn best practices for supporting young people.
- Creative, curious, and the ability to adapt to the school environment. This position is stationed outdoors and has limited classroom settings.
- Must participate in training required by the Club, County, State, and/or funders.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including late afternoons, and some weekends and/or holidays when the club is open.
- Strong written communications for emails, experience with Microsoft Teams, and the ability to learn the club database functions. Comfort using an iPad or tablet for everyday work operations.
- Must be able to pass background checks, fingerprinting, and TB test
- Must obtain/maintain a current CPR & First Aid Certification upon employment
