Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and driven Machine Vision Engineer to join our industrial automation team. This role is pivotal in driving growth by designing, validating, and deploying complex machine vision solutions that address our clients' most challenging inspection, measurement, and automation problems. The ideal candidate is a recognized expert in machine vision technology—spanning optics, lighting, hardware, and software algorithms—and possesses exceptional client-facing interpersonal skills. This role is responsible for the entire project lifecycle, from pre-sales consultation and feasibility studies conducted in the lab to on-site deployment and post-sales support. This is a remote-based position requiring approximately 25% travel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pre-Sales Consultation and Concept Development
  • Partner with the sales team and clients as the primary technical advisor to deeply understand application requirements, manufacturing processes, and success criteria.
  • Conduct site evaluations to assess the physical environment, available integration points, and potential challenges.
  • Develop clear, accurate Statements of Work (SOWs) and technical proposals, defining the project scope, required hardware, and estimated engineering effort.
  • Articulate complex technical concepts clearly and persuasively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Feasibility Studies and Lab Evaluation

  • Perform comprehensive feasibility studies and proof-of-concept (POC) testing in an office/lab environment using client-provided samples.
  • Select and specify optimal machine vision components, including cameras (area scan, line scan, 3D), lenses, filters, and specialized lighting configurations (e.g., dark field, bright field, structured light).
  • Develop and benchmark image processing algorithms and software solutions to prove the viability of the proposed inspection.
  • Document findings meticulously, providing detailed reports and data analysis to support technical recommendations.

System Design and Development

  • Design the complete vision solution architecture, ensuring robust performance and seamless integration with existing industrial controls.
  • Develop the application software using industry-leading machine vision platforms (e.g., Cognex, Keyence, Zebra, Halcon, or similar).
  • Configure communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, TCP/IP) for integration with PLCs, robots, and manufacturing execution systems (MES).

Deployment and post-sales Engineering

  • Lead the on-site installation, calibration, and commissioning of the machine vision systems at client facilities.
  • Optimize system performance under real-world production conditions, adjusting lighting, optics, and software parameters as needed.
  • Conduct Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (Gage R&R) studies to validate system performance against specifications.
  • Provide comprehensive training to client personnel and deliver prompt, effective post-sales technical support and troubleshooting.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science, Optics) or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience designing and deploying machine vision solutions in an industrial environment.
  • Expert-level proficiency with at least one major machine vision software platform (e.g., Cognex VisionPro/In-Sight, Matrox MIL, Keyence XG/CV-X, Halcon).
  • Deep theoretical and practical understanding of optics, lighting techniques, and image acquisition principles for challenging surfaces and defects.
  • Proven experience in a client-facing, consultative role (pre-sales or field engineering).
  • Ability to travel approximately 25% of the time, primarily domestically.
  • Must have a suitable home office environment capable of housing a lab setup for evaluations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • AIA Certified Vision Professional (CVP) – Advanced Level certification.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C#, Python, or .NET for custom application development.
  • Experience integrating vision systems with industrial robots (e.g., FANUC, KUKA, ABB) and PLCs (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
  • Experience with 3D machine vision technologies and/or Deep Learning-based inspection tools.

Technical Skills

  • Optics and Lighting Optimization
  • Image Processing and Algorithm Development
  • Machine Vision Software Platforms
  • System Calibration and Validation (Gage R&R)
  • Industrial Communication Protocols
  • PLC/Robot Integration
  • Feasibility Analysis & POC Development

Professional Attributes

  • Consultative Communication: Ability to translate complex client needs into actionable technical solutions and manage expectations effectively.
  • Analytical Problem-Solving: Tenacity in solving complex technical challenges where solutions are not immediately apparent.
  • Autonomy: Highly self-motivated and disciplined, capable of working effectively in a remote environment with minimal supervision.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines and budgets.
  • Adaptability: Quick to learn new technologies and adapt to diverse manufacturing environments.
