Job Summary: Provides direct and indirect patient care in the maternity and newborn care setting. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient’s clinical condition including: maternal and fetal status, results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, is able to perform general nursing duties in all departments. Participates in performance improvement activities.

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:
- Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
- Ability to assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation according to AHA/AAP guidelines.
- Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes neonatal and the general patient population.
- Demonstrates and documents point of care testing.
- Ability to formulate an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness.
- Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning (family is included in teaching as appropriate).
- Demonstrates knowledge of fetal monitoring, identifies FHR patterns and treats appropriately based upon ACOG/AWHONN standards.
- Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures in labor and delivery, postpartum and newborn nursery.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to Nurse Manager, co-workers, physicians, and other appropriate hospital personnel.
- Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
- Coordinates, supervises, and provides patient care within scope of practice utilizing hospital policies.
- Demonstrates proficiency with Meditech system.
- Demonstrates initiative, an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Delegates effectively.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Maintains confidentiality.
- Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves them in the formation of the plan of care. Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patient and family.

- Assists with the birth certificate process.
Professional Requirements:
- Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and clean.
- Completes annual education requirements. Maintains regulatory requirements.
- Trains staff/students and acts as a positive role model.
- Demonstrates knowledge of emergency policies. Participates in drills; documents as required.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled. Completes work within designated time.
- Wears identification while on duty. Uses computerized time clock system correctly.
- Attends in-services and completes documentation as required.
- Attends and participates in at least 50% of staff meetings & reads and acknowledges minutes.
- Utilizes Standard Precautions and proper techniques in handling chemical agents. Reports environmental hazards.
- Exhibits the JCMH “Standards of Performance” at all times.
Education/Regulatory Requirements & Experience:
- Current state Registered Nurse Licensure.
- One or more years of recent Labor and Delivery/Post Partum/Newborn Nursery experience preferred.
- Current Neonatal Resuscitation certification*.
- BLS required. (May be obtained during New Employee Orientation)
- Fetal monitoring workshop within first year of employment.
- Regulatory Requirement indicated with a “*” may be completed within 12 months of employment.
- Previous work history that demonstrates steady attendance and punctuality is required.
Language Skills:
- Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Additional languages preferred.

- Basic computer knowledge and keyboarding skills.
