Description

The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic supports the Academy by providing excellent service and dedication in carrying out tasks assigned by the Director of Facilities. The Mechanic is responsible for planning, scheduling, and performing preventative maintenance and repairs on the school's fleet of vehicles and various mechanical equipment to ensure they are in safe and optimal operating condition, meeting all local, state, and federal requirements. The role requires a high degree of technical skill, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a maintenance team. 


  

Key Responsibilities:

Mechanic:

  • Vehicle Maintenance and Repair: Inspect, diagnose, adjust, and repair mechanical defects and malfunctions in a variety of vehicles (e.g., buses, vans, cars, light and heavy trucks).
  • Preventative Maintenance: Conduct routine preventative maintenance and safety checks, including changing oil, checking fluid levels, rotating tires, and testing parts and systems for proper operation.
  • Diagnostic Testing: Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment, scanners, engine analyzers, and other testing instruments to identify problems accurately.
  • System Overhauls: Perform general overhauls and repairs on engines (gasoline and diesel), transmissions, brake systems      (hydraulic and air), electrical systems, suspension, and hydraulic systems.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure all vehicles are in compliance with the Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Code and safety inspection procedures; perform required safety inspections.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed records of all repairs, maintenance performed, parts used, and costs, to ensure compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Assist in the maintenance and repair of other mechanical equipment on school grounds (e.g., groundskeeping equipment, small engines, pumps); may include fabricating, welding, and painting.
  • Emergency Response: Respond to emergency vehicle breakdowns and other urgent maintenance calls as needed.
  • Shop Management: Maintain and clean the work area, tools, and equipment in a safe and orderly condition; manage inventory of parts and supplies, and initiate purchase orders.
  • Collaboration: Work effectively with other staff, including drivers and the transportation director, to prioritize repairs and minimize disruption to school operations. 

Maintenance:

· Screen, window, and door repair.

· Turns in all assigned work orders upon completion.

· Participates in daily trash removal as assigned.

· Participates in daily deliveries of items as assigned.

· Participates in repairs and renovations. Work involved may include the envelope of the building, interior, including finishes, and mechanical equipment.

· Participates in groundskeeping efforts as assigned and required.

· Participates in snow and ice removal, possible overtime and shift change as required.

· Reports to the Facilities Director when in need of additional work.

· Carries out all other duties assigned by the Facilities foreperson.

Requirements

Physical Requirements:

  • The position involves frequent moderate to strenuous physical effort, including standing for extended periods, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and working from ladders, as well as working in cramped spaces. The employee must be able to frequently lift and move items weighing up to 60 pounds or more. The work environment may involve exposure to noise, fumes, and extreme temperatures.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. A certificate or diploma from a recognized trade, technical, or vocational school with a major in automotive shop practice is preferred.
  • Valid Massachusetts Driver's License.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and procedures of diagnosing and repairing gasoline and diesel engines and associated mechanical/electrical systems.
  • Proficiency in the use of a wide range of manual, power, and diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and diagrams.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and time management skills. 
Salary Description
$20 - $25 / hour
