Help shape the future of maritime design! Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) is seeking a talented and driven Marine Engineer to become part of our dynamic team of maritime professionals. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative vessel designs and cutting-edge marine engineering solutions. The ideal candidate will hold a degree in either electrical or mechanical engineering and will play a key role in guiding our design efforts and supporting a diverse client base across the United States. A successful candidate may also possess cross-disciplinary skills such as naval architecture or marine structural engineering.
RESPONSIBILITIES
System Design and Integration
- Design, evaluate, and integrate electrical and/or mechanical systems for marine vessels.
- Ensure all mechanical and electrical designs comply with applicable marine regulations and standards (e.g., CFRs, IMO, ABS, DNV, IEC, SOLAS).
- Serve projects for both new vessel design and existing vessel refurbishment and modifications.
Systems Analysis and Troubleshooting
- Assist in leading root-cause analysis and diagnostics for complex electrical and/or mechanical system issues on new builds and existing vessels.
- Assist in the development and implement corrective actions, upgrades, and system optimizations.
Project Execution and Oversight
- Collaborate with naval architects, mechanical engineers, shipbuilders and third-party vendors.
- Prepare project documentation including specifications, schematics, reports, and progress updates.
- Review and provide comments on detail designs submitted by shipyard contractors.
Compliance and Quality Assurance
- Conduct inspections and verifications to ensure compliance with regulatory, safety, and classification society requirements.
- Prepare documentation for approval, certification, and audits.
- Stay current with emerging technologies in marine electrification, mechanics, hybrid propulsion, and energy efficiency.
- Minimum four (4) years of experience within the maritime industry, providing mechanical/electrical design support
- Bachelor of Science degree from ABET accredited curriculum
- EIT or working or retrieving Certification
- Professional Engineer's license preferred
- AutoCAD and MS Office Skills. Familiarity with Rhino is favorable
- Ability to perform onsite ship inspections
- Maintain membership in SNAME, ASME, ASCE, or IEEE
- Must have intermediate knowledge of marine construction, ship repair, safety standards and regulatory frameworks, with proven capability in shipyard and marine operations.
SPECIFIC SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Experience in vessel system design including electrical load analyses, one-line diagrams, lighting and receptacle layouts, and DC power systems with minimal oversight.
- Experience integrating vendor provided systems into overall vessel design including electric propulsion, alarm and monitoring, internal communications, fire detection, navigation and external communication, and navigation light systems, with minimal oversight.
- Conceptual understanding of marine mechanical systems including fluid handling, mechanical propulsion components, hydraulics, and HVAC.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with solid reasoning.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to interpret data and develop design solutions.
- Proficient in technical research, reporting, and clear written communication.
- Effective team player who can also work independently.
- Strong verbal communication skills and ability to present technical ideas clearly.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
Work is primarily performed in a remote office environment; however, the role requires flexibility to travel by car, plane, and vessel. Must be able to perform essential functions of vessel inspections, which may include climbing ladders, entering confined spaces, and conducting physical tasks in varied environment conditions.
