Summary

While upholding the Star Valley Health mission, vision and values, this key position is critical in supporting our mission to deliver high-quality patient care by ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of our databases and data integration systems. The Database Administrator will lead in the selection and implementation for a long-term data strategy, manage healthcare-related databases, develop extracts and reports, and supports system integrations across clinical, financial, and administrative applications. They will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing database policies and procedures to ensure integrity and availability of data. This is an "at will" position. 


Job Duties

Database Management

  • Administer, monitor, and optimize enterprise databases (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB) 
  • Ensure high availability, disaster recovery, and backup/restore strategies 
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA, HITECH, and hospital IT policies 
  • Coordinate database activities with technical and operational teams for the database systems 


Data Extracts and Reporting

  • Design, develop, and maintain extracts for operational, financial, and clinical reporting needs 
  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative stakeholders to deliver accurate, timely data 
  • Support regulatory reporting (CMS, state health agencies, etc.) 


Integration & Interoperability

  • Support HL7, FHIR, and EDI integrations with Electronic Health Record (EHR), billing systems, and external partners 
  • Support Epic's native integration tools in coordination with EHR vendor 
  • Troubleshoot and maintain data pipelines between hospital systems and third-party applications 
  • Work with interface engines (e.g., Cloverleaf, Mirth Connect, Rhapsody) to enable seamless data flow 


Performance & Security

  • Implement proactive monitoring and tuning for database performance 
  • Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with hospital and regulatory standards 
  • Conduct regular audits and risk assessments for data systems 
  • Write technical documentation regarding the design, development, testing, and maintenance processes, and procedures related to data transfer and report development activities 


Collaboration & Partnership

  • Work effectively and collaboratively with OCHIN (the hospital's key technology partner) to provide a durable platform for database management, data integration, and related technology initiatives 
  • Must demonstrate proactive communication, accountability, and responsive problem-solving 
  • Partner with hospital leadership on IT projects 
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor 


Requirements

Abilities & Skills:

  • Proficiency with relational and non-relational database platforms 
  • Experience with ETL tools and data warehouse environments 
  • Strong SQL scripting and stored procedure development 
  • Knowledge of HL7, FHIR, X12, and healthcare interoperability standards 
  • Familiarity with HIPAA security and compliance requirements 
  • Understanding of Epic's data model and reporting tools 
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking 
  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and clinical audiences 
  • Detail-oriented with commitment to data accuracy and security 


Experience & Education:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field 
  • Preferred 5-7+ years of professional database administration experience, preferably in healthcare 
  • Preferred experience with hospital information systems (Epic) 
  • Preferred certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator, Oracle DBA, or equivalent
