Summary Job Goal: In accordance with Federal and State rules, regulations and guidelines governing a number of differing Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), LIHEAP, and BIA Assistance Programs, work includes in-depth interviews, data collection, data review and analysis, investigations, eligibility determinations and benefit authorizations.
Performance Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Functions at the entry/trainee level, receiving and applying training in public assistance program requirements, procedure and related subjects, and developing competence in determining eligibility and authorizing benefits.
- Receives formal and on-the-job training in the following: policies, procedures, and requirements of differing public assistance programs, including those under the jurisdiction of another governmental agency such as child support enforcement and permanent fund dividend programs; the application and operation of the division’s computer system (EIS); the orientation to the purposes and function of the division within the assigned geographical area; and the interviewing techniques used by staff.
- Interspersed between formal training sessions, increasingly reviews and conducts routine casework (eligibility determinations and benefit authorizations) while learning how to interpret and apply the knowledge gained during training. Work is monitored and evaluated by staff.
- Handles a caseload, which is incrementally increased by size and complexity of various programs.
- Work includes the gathering of required verifications pertaining to income, resources, expenses, etc.
- Conducting necessary interviews, making the initial or continuing eligibility determinations.
- Reviewing monthly client submittals and/or change reports.
- Authorizing correspondence to applicants/recipients on anticipated changes; determining benefit levels; need for additional documentation and information; case status, policy explanations or budget calculations.
