The Registered Nurse (RN) will report directly to the Medical Director of the Student Health
Center (SHC) at Saint Mary’s College of California. According to established protocol or
direction of the clinic’s physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant, the RN performs a
variety of skilled and professional nursing duties and provides triage services to students in the
SHC. This includes caring for minor illnesses, injuries, and emergencies and providing students
with health education and support while exhibiting compassion, cultural sensitivity and
confidentiality for patients.
15 – 25 hrs/week for 33 weeks/year (off summers and other holiday/vacation weeks regular
college classes not in session)
Essential Responsibilities
• Patient Care: According to the established SHC nursing policies, procedures and protocols, the
RN will provide treatment, perform clinical tests, complete documentation and provide
assistance to other clinicians in patient care. The RN will triage and assess all patients based on
their clinical presentation, including obtaining vital signs and their chief complaint. The RN,
under a clinician's supervision or written policy and nursing protocol, will obtain EKG's, lab
tests, administer vaccines, manage breathing treatments, obtain peak flow measurements, start
and maintain IVs, administer medications, perform wound care and ear lavage and assist in
office procedures.
• Health Education: The RN will provide health education and promote wellness concepts during
each patient visit. The RN will review clinician care plans, as well as correct use of medication
and potential side effects with patient. The RN may also provide patient education through phone
or in-clinic triage utilizing the established nursing protocols. There are often opportunities for the
RN to collaborate with faculty and staff in providing health education outside the clinic.
• Communication/Documentation: The RN will practice effective oral and written
communication with all clinicians, administrative staff and patients to ensure accuracy of patient
care. The RN will maintain strict patient confidentiality at all times and review medical records
for accuracy and completion. Follow-up contact will be performed for patients with serious or
ongoing medical issues
• Administration: Administrative duties as needed including reviewing submitted immunization
requirements for incoming students and travel health forms for study abroad. The RN will help
facilitate referrals for patients to local medical clinics. They will also assist in restocking and
ordering medical supplies. Once a month a crash cart check will be performed.
• Preceptorship: Provide quality training and clinical supervision to SMC nursing students
participating in their clinical rotation at the SHC.

Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred
Licenses & Certifications: CA RN license, BLS certificationExperience: Healthcare experience
in a higher education environment, urgent care, or medical clinic preferred.
Skills/Abilities:
• Nursing skills: triage experience, EKG's, in-house lab testing, vaccine administration and blood
draws required.
• Good communicator, works well in team environment and analytical skills. Microsoft Word
and Excel knowledge.
