TMMG is seeking a senior-level Engineering Design Team (EDT) Lead Design Engineer to run the day-to-day operations of the EDT and ensure consistent, high-quality engineering execution across multiple concurrent projects supporting Military Sealift Command (MSC), U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, and commercial maritime operators. The EDT delivers multi-discipline engineering design and technical solutions across shipboard systems design, shipboard systems diagnostics and solutions, shipboard operations and troubleshooting, and shipyard installation and commissioning support.
The Lead Design Engineer will bring a minimum of 10 years of engineering management experience with demonstrated success leading engineering teams in commercial ship operations/design, shipboard maintenance environments, and commercial ship repair/modernization. Candidates must possess at least a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Structural, Marine, or Systems Engineering (or closely related engineering discipline).
This position reports to the Engineering Design Team Program Manager and leads a team of Senior, Mid-level, and Junior Engineers across multiple engineering disciplines and AutoCAD Technicians/Designers. Work is performed under an approved ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System, with a focus on delivering high-quality products on schedule and budget while maintaining high first-time acceptance rates.
Day-to-Day EDT Operations & Team Leadership
• Lead daily execution across EDT workstreams by assigning priorities, balancing workload, removing blockers, and maintaining predictable delivery of engineering products.
• Supervise and coordinate multi-discipline engineering resources including Naval Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, Automation, Electronics/Communications, Marine Designers, and related technical staff.
• Establish and maintain a disciplined cadence for project reviews, technical reviews, schedule/hours tracking, quality checks, and customer communications.
• Mentor engineers and designers to strengthen engineering judgment, documentation discipline, and customer delivery performance.
Project Management, Cost Control & Performance Accountability
• Manage multiple engineering design teams and multiple projects simultaneously; maintain execution discipline across schedule, cost, and technical scope.
• Manage labor hours, budgets, and cost performance for multiple projects; forecast ETC, identify variance drivers early, and recommend corrective actions.
• Develop and enforce internal deliverable standards to achieve high first-time acceptance and reduce rework.
Engineering Design Execution & Deliverable Oversight
• Manage multiple engineering design teams and multiple projects simultaneously; maintain execution discipline across schedule, cost, and technical scope.
• Lead and oversee development of engineering work packages including drawings, calculations, analysis, technical reports, and installation-ready design products.
• Perform and oversee ship checks supporting ShipAlt/TRANSALT packages, modernization, obsolescence replacements, troubleshooting, and integration of new technologies (structural, mechanical, electrical, electronics).
• Ensure design products reflect field conditions through redlines, ship check packages, and final AutoCAD updates under configuration control.
Compliance, Class/Regulatory Alignment & Technical Governance
• Assure designs are in accordance with NAVSEA, IEEE, ABS, and USCG rules, specifications, and regulations; ensure compliance is built into designs early, not inspected in late.
• Review and approve design work packages for completeness, accuracy, constructability, and conformance to TMMG design standards and ISO processes.
• Provide technical leadership for design reviews and customer engagements, ensuring engineering rationale is clear, defensible, and well documented.
Shipboard Diagnostics, Troubleshooting & Installation/Commissioning Support
• Provide technical oversight for shipboard systems diagnostics and solutions, shipboard operations troubleshooting, and shipyard installation/commissioning support activities.
• Coordinate with shipyard teams, ship’s force, vendors, and customer stakeholders to resolve technical issues and maintain schedule progress.
• Ensure engineering recommendations translate into executable shipboard/shipyard actions and verified outcomes.
Material Readiness, Assessments & Corrective Action Development
• Perform shipboard material readiness assessments and develop corrective action reports based on shipboard assessments and field findings.
• Convert assessment results into engineered solutions, work items, and documentation updates that improve readiness and reduce recurrence.
Continuous Improvement & Quality Management
• Execute all work within the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System; ensure consistent adherence to procedures, reviews, and records retention.
• Drive continuous improvement by tracking rework drivers, improving review checklists, and implementing repeatable best practices across EDT.
