Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Vice President of Engineering to provide technical leadership and strategic direction for our startup's engineering department. Reporting directly to the CEO, you will be responsible for overseeing the end-to-end software development lifecycle, ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality products and solutions.

Job Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership

  • Define and execute the company's technical vision and long-term engineering strategy. 
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to a team of engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Team Management

  • Build, manage, and develop a high-performing engineering team. 
  • Recruit, hire, and retain top talent, ensuring the team has the skills and resources needed to meet strategic objectives. 
  • Embrace a startup culture and nurture an agile, fast-paced work environment.

Product Development

  • Collaborate with product management to translate business requirements into technical specifications and project plans. 
  • Drive the development and delivery of scalable, reliable, and user-centric software solutions, iterating quickly to meet the evolving needs of our startup.

Agile Methodologies

  • Implement and optimize agile development methodologies and best practices to increase efficiency, productivity, and the quality of software deliverables. 
  • Emphasize rapid prototyping, experimentation, and iterative development.

Technical Excellence

  • Establish and enforce engineering standards, processes, and quality controls. Foster a culture of technical excellence, emphasizing code quality, documentation, testing, and security. 
  • Encourage innovation and exploration of new technologies to maintain a competitive edge.

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with other departments, including product management, design, and operations, to align engineering efforts with overall business objectives and ensure seamless product integrations. 
  • Embrace a collaborative, cross-functional approach to problem-solving and decision-making.

Technology Evaluation

  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends. 
  • Evaluate new tools, frameworks, and technologies that can enhance our platform's capabilities and competitive advantage, while balancing resource constraints typical of a startup.

Risk Management

  • Identify potential risks and challenges in software development projects. 
  • Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies to ensure successful project completion. 
  • Foster a culture of experimentation, embracing a fail-fast mentality to learn and iterate quickly.

Performance Monitoring

  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to monitor and evaluate the performance of engineering initiatives. 
  • Regularly report progress, challenges, and opportunities to the executive team. 
  • Adapt and pivot as needed to achieve business objectives.
Requirements

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, software engineering, or equivalent experience. Advanced technical degree preferred.
  • Proven experience (10+ years) in software engineering, including significant experience in a leadership role in startup environments.
  • Strong background in developing and delivering complex, scalable, and reliable SaaS or PaaS applications.
  • Deep understanding of software development methodologies, agile practices, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
  • Expertise in modern software languages, frameworks, and technologies, such as Java, Python, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, React, Angular, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Experience with healthcare-related technologies, standards, and regulations (HIPAA, HL7, FHIR) is highly desirable.
  • Track record of successfully managing and developing high-performing engineering teams.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams, senior leadership, and stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on innovation and driving technical excellence.
  • Results-oriented mindset with a demonstrated ability to deliver projects on time and within budget.
