Position Summary

We are seeking a Pharmacy Intern to support patient counseling and clinical call center operations under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This role focuses on patient education, medication support, and call-based engagement to ensure patients understand their therapy, adhere to treatment plans, and have a positive experience with our pharmacy services. The Pharmacy Intern will gain hands-on experience in patient communication, medication safety, and collaborative clinical workflows while supporting safe and compliant pharmacy operations.


Key Responsibilities

Pharmacy Operations & Patient Support

  • Support daily pharmacy operations under the direct supervision of licensed pharmacists, including phone support, prescription processing, refill coordination, and workflow support.
  • Assist with patient interactions by phone, directing clinical questions to a licensed pharmacist as appropriate.
  • Accurately document activities and maintain pharmacy records in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements.

Clinical Support & Medication Safety

  • Assist pharmacists in identifying potential medication-related issues such as refill delays, adherence challenges, or patient access concerns, and escalate appropriately.
  • Support medication therapy programs, inventory management, and follow-up activities as assigned.
  • Support patients and pharmacists by facilitating prescription transfers and coordinating with prescribers to obtain prescriptions or necessary clarifications.
  • Participate in quality assurance, safety checks, and error-prevention workflows within intern scope of practice.

Team Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and support staff to ensure efficient workflow and continuity of patient care.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with team members to support daily pharmacy operations.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and on-the-job learning opportunities to enhance clinical and operational knowledge.

Compliance & Professional Development

  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and organizational regulations, including HIPAA and patient privacy standards.
  • Adhere to intern scope-of-practice guidelines and supervision requirements at all times.
  • Actively engage in feedback and learning opportunities to develop pharmacy knowledge, professionalism, and operational skills.

     

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program.
  • Active Pharmacy Intern license in Ohio (or ability to obtain prior to start date).
  • Interest in community, retail, or institutional pharmacy practice.
  • Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and patient safety.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced pharmacy environment.

Work Environment

  • In-person pharmacy setting with direct pharmacist supervision, compliant with Ohio Board of Pharmacy regulations limiting supervision to two interns per pharmacist.
  • Combination of standing, walking, and workstation-based tasks throughout the shift.
  • Exposure to real-world pharmacy operations and hands-on learning opportunities.
     

Essential Functions of the Job

  • Must be able to answer phone calls and conduct patient counseling activities throughout scheduled work shifts.
  • Must be able to remain seated and focused at a workstation for extended periods.
  • Must be able to effectively use computer systems, telephony platforms, and pharmacy software to complete daily tasks.
  • Must have reliable internet access and a private, quiet workspace to ensure patient confidentiality.
