Established in 1967, Temple Beth El of Boca Raton is Boca Raton’s first Jewish house of worship, and is the largest Reform congregation in Florida. We are currently searching for a Development Director whose primary responsibilities will be to organize and support the Temple’s ongoing fundraising efforts. Significant components of the Temple’s development programs include, but are not limited to, an endowment/legacy giving campaign, annual high holy day appeal, annual gala fundraising event, and donor cultivation, stewardship, and recognition – all as described in more detail below.
This position is full time and is primarily located on our Schaefer Family Campus in Boca Raton, Florida at 333 SW 4th Avenue. Temple Beth El has a separate educational campus located at 9800 Yamato Road in Boca Raton where this individual will also be expected to maintain a presence from time-to-time. Salary is commensurate with relevant work experience at the fundraising director level. Preference will be given to candidates with extensive experience raising money for a sophisticated nonprofit. Individuals applying for this position must have a deep understanding of how to organize a successful fundraising operation, support a campaign, and plan and execute fundraising events. This individual will also be responsible for cultivating relationships with existing and potential benefactors, and soliciting and closing major gifts.
We are searching for a seasoned development professional who can approach all aspects of fundraising in a manner that motivates volunteers and staff to participate and excel. This individual must be an experienced fundraising professional who is detail oriented, extremely organized, a team player, possess a high energy level and is able to attend weekend and evening events. In addition, it is essential this individual have experience with fundraising donor database software, mathematics proficiency, proven ability to initiate ideas and follow through on tasks, be an excellent communicator, and possess the interpersonal skills to work well with a variety of strong volunteer and staff leaders. We would prefer a candidate with prior development experience in the Jewish community, particularly in this geographic area.
The primary responsibilities of the Development Director include:
- Lead and manage all Temple fundraising programs.
- Cultivate personal relationships with existing and potential benefactors.
- Solicit and close major gifts.
- Lead all aspects of an ongoing multi-million dollar endowment campaign.
- Attend community events, lunch dates, appointments outside the temple, and other social opportunities to meet personally with donors in order to develop individual relationships.
- Develop and implement a systematic approach to fundraising that capitalizes on the existing relationships between clergy, lay leadership, senior staff and the Temple’s donor base.
- Motivate and collaborate with key volunteer and staff leadership on fundraising efforts and coordinate necessary training.
- Continue the leadership of the Temple’s ongoing “Create A Jewish Legacy” program which seeks to maximize donations in the form of permanent endowment funds, lifetime gifts, and bequests in wills and trusts.
- Plan and execute fundraising events and online giving strategies, including the execution of a major gala fundraising event each year.
- Ensure that all donations are appropriately documented, recognized and that donors are thanked promptly and in an appropriate manner.
- Facilitate lay, clergy and staff cultivation of relationships with prospective and existing donors and in the solicitation of gifts.
- Lead and manage the Temple’s annual high holy day appeal which raises funds for the Temple’s various scholarship programs.
- Assist other departments and Temple auxiliary groups such as Sisterhood, Brotherhood, the Religious School and the Early Learning Center with their fundraising needs.
- Maintain a donor database including appropriate data and reports to support fundraising efforts.
- Supervise the staff responsible for the gift entry and acknowledgement processes.
- Supervise day-to-day fundraising tasks including such things as Yahrzeit donations, honors and tributes, bar/bat mitzvah donations, etc.
- Act as staff liaison to the Temple’s Vice President of Development.
- Supervise and mentor the Development Events Coordinator and the Development Associate.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position is responsible for the supervision of a full time Development Events Coordinator and a full time Development Associate.
TRAVEL
Some travel may be required between Beth El campuses and to meetings, conferences and special events is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job is performed in a traditional office setting. Some use of personal vehicle for business purposes may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS
In addition to the skills listed above:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- At least five years prior fundraising experience.
- Knowledge of the local Jewish community.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
