Description

The position of Youth Development Professional (Sports Focus) supports the planning, organizing, promotion,

implementation, and evaluation of teen-focused sports, fitness, and wellness programs. This role leads activities

primarily in athletics while also supporting arts, academic enrichment, and leadership development opportunities for

teens. In addition, the Youth Development Professional provides supervision, mentorship, and promotes sustained

engagement of teen members through positive, developmentally appropriate programming.


This is a part-time position, Monday–Friday afternoons, working 22.5 hours per week.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implements, monitors, and evaluates teen sports and fitness programs to ensure member safety, program quality, and alignment with youth development outcomes.
  • Creates a supportive, inclusive environment that promotes teen leadership, confidence, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles.
  • Recognizes and celebrates teen members for program participation, growth, effort, and achievement.
  • Maintains accurate records to track teen attendance, participation, and engagement.
  • Recommends the development of new teen-centered sports, fitness, and wellness activities and enhancements to existing programming.
  • Actively promotes and stimulates teen participation through relationship-building and outreach.
  • Orients new teen members to sports programs, special events, leadership opportunities, and club safety, program, and disciplinary expectations.
  • Provides guidance, mentorship, and positive role modeling to teens, emphasizing sportsmanship, accountability, goal-setting, and personal growth.
  • Participates in training and professional development opportunities to expand skills in youth development, teen engagement, sports, and fitness, as well as programmatic and staff meetings.
  • Maintains order as required and in accordance with BGCMLA policy, supporting teens in understanding expectations, and making positive choices.
  • Supervises and trains volunteers and program assistants, particularly in teen sports and fitness activities.
  • Monitors supply and equipment needs for sports programs and informs the Supervisor when materials or replacements are needed.
  • Ensures sports and fitness areas are safe, organized, and welcoming for teens; keeps bulletin boards and notices current and relevant.
  • Completes and submits all required paperwork accurately and on time.
  • Recommends needed repairs to sports equipment and facilities to ensure safe teen participation.
  • As needed, participates in or leads community outreach, teen recruitment efforts, program extensions, and club-related events.
  • Works collaboratively as part of a team to deliver high-quality teen programming, assisting where needed or directed, which may include driving club vehicles.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION

  • High School diploma or GED required; a minimum of two years of college experience preferred.
  • Combined experience and/or formal training equivalent to a minimum of two years, including:
  • Experience working with teens and knowledge of adolescent development.
  • Formal training and/or experience facilitating engaging sports, fitness, or recreational activities for youth.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect effectively with teens.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a motor vehicle driving record check.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to pass a TB test (negative result).
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications preferred.
  • Prior experience working in a Boys & Girls Club preferred.
  • Prior experience in sports coaching, fitness training, or teen recreation preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY and SKILLS

  • Knowledge of sports, fitness, and positive youth development principles, particularly as they relate to teens.
  • Skilled in creative planning and implementation of quality teen sports programs, organization, project management, and achieving positive outcomes.
  • Ability to work effectively with teen members, including supporting behavior management in a developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Demonstrated strength in relationship-building with teens, families, and colleagues.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, facilitate diverse groups of teens, manage time effectively, and complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.

WORKING CONDITIONS and DRIVING

  • Travel between Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles sites and schools and various field trip sites as well as in the community is required. Must meet the insurance standards of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles. 
  • Hours are based on school calendar and attendance patterns/trends – evening hours are required during the school year; hours will vary during summer and school breaks; occasional weekend hours are required.

The position involves lifting; bending; reaching with hands and arms; climbing or balancing; stooping, kneeling, standing, walking, crouching, or crawling; frequent interruptions via in-person contact, phone calls, and email are expected. Will be subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions based on activity location. Required to work around youth and adults where noise levels may be moderate to high during activities. Physical exertion may be required to lift supplies and equipment.

Salary Description
$22/hour
