Position Description: Automation Engineer
The Automation Engineer is responsible for designing, programming, implementing, and supporting automated manufacturing equipment used in the production of power distribution units. This role requires expertise in controls engineering, electrical design, industrial automation, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate has strong experience with PLCs, HMIs, robotics, panel wiring, and troubleshooting automation within a high-mix, durable-goods production environment.
Primary Duties:
• Design, program, and troubleshoot PLC-based control systems (Allen-Bradley preferred).
• Develop and support automation for assembly, testing, and inspection of power distribution equipment.
• Integrate robotics, sensors, machine vision, and industrial networks into manufacturing processes.
• Create electrical schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams for automated machinery.
• Improve manufacturing efficiency through automation upgrades and new system development.
• Collaborate with production, quality, and engineering teams to automate manual processes.
• Support safety system integration including interlocks, light curtains, and emergency stops.
• Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for automation issues.
• Maintain documentation including PLC code, HMI programs, network configurations, and electrical drawings.
Skills & Experience:
• 3–7 years of automation or controls engineering experience in manufacturing.
• Hands-on experience with PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar).
• Experience with industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, OPC-UA).
• Strong understanding of electrical circuits, three-phase power, and control systems.
• Ability to read and create electrical schematics (AutoCAD or equivalent).
• Experience integrating industrial sensors, actuators, pneumatics, and motion control systems.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Experience with safety controls and machine safeguarding.
Education:
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or related field.
Preferred:
• Experience automating testing systems for electrical products.
• Robotics programming (Fanuc, UR, ABB, or similar).
• Experience with SCADA systems or data acquisition.
• Lean manufacturing or Six Sigma certification.
• Knowledge of NFPA 79, IEC standards, and industrial safety compliance.
