POSITION SUMMARY:

A Summer Camp Counselor provides leadership and guidance for a group of campers, ensuring a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. A Summer Camp Counselor creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Under the direction of the Youth Services & Athletics Program Director, the Summer Camp Counselor will be responsible for assisting with the planning, development and implementation of program activities.


 

ESSNENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervise campers during all activities (games, art, music, swimming, outdoor play).
  • Plan and lead a progressive camp program supporting mental, physical, and spiritual growth.
  • Create opportunities that build camper awareness and personal development.
  • Ensure every camper has a fun, positive camp experience.
  • Model good behavior in punctuality, manners, language, appearance, and health.
  • Promote respect and care for camp facilities and the outdoors.
  • Build group unity by making all campers feel included.
  • Maintain communication with parents as needed and support positive public relations.
  • Monitor attendance, camper safety, and always know the group’s whereabouts—never leave campers unattended.
  • Maintain equipment, records, cleanliness, attend trainings, and report needs or unusual situations to the Youth Site Coordinator.

Requirements

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA.
  • This position requires experience working with youth.
  • Willingness to have fun, laugh, and be silly.


JOB REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain control of an area despite noise or distractions
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications (within 30 days of hire)
  • Completion of Child Abuse Prevention training (within 30 days of hire)
  • Ability to implement age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate activities


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time
  • Lift items (up to 20 lbs)
  • Carry items (up to 20 lbs)
  • Must be able to communicate verbally with good voice projection


 

YMCA SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
CPR & First Aid – Must be able to complete and maintain certification in CPR and First Aid; able to assist individuals in need until professional help arrives.

Emergency Response – Ability to quickly identify emergency situations (medical, fire, environmental, etc.) and respond appropriately following established procedures.

Incident Management – Required to report all safety incidents and hazards immediately and accurately to supervisors.

Safe Environment – Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and hazard-free environment for all staff, members, and participants.

Physical Readiness – Must be able to perform physical tasks related to safety, including assisting individuals of various ages and physical abilities.

Compliance – Follow all YMCA safety protocols, OSHA standards, and state/local regulations as applicable.
