Role Overview

Connie Health is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to own and evolve the core policy status tracking and commissions payment systems that sit at the heart of our Medicare platform. These systems are foundational to how we operate as a business, powering financial reporting, policy lifecycle management, agent compensation, carrier reconciliation, and customer trust.

This is a high-impact role operating at the intersection of complex business logic, data integrity, and system reliability. You will be responsible for designing and maintaining backend services that accurately model policy lifecycles, enforce state transitions, and calculate and disburse commissions across multiple carriers and products. Beyond day-to-day execution, you will shape the long-term technical direction of these systems, ensuring they scale with the business and remain correct in a highly regulated environment.

This is a hybrid role, based out of our new Boston office near South Station.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the backend architecture and implementation for policy status tracking, including policy lifecycle state machines, transitions, and reconciliation with external carrier systems.
  • Design, build, and maintain the commissions calculation and payment systems, ensuring correctness, auditability, and scalability as volume and complexity grow.
  • Build and evolve APIs and internal services using TypeScript and NestJS, deployed on AWS.
  • Partner closely with Finance, Operations, and Data teams to ensure policy and commission data serves as a reliable source of truth for reporting, payouts, and forecasting.
  • Design and maintain data models in Postgres for transactional correctness and Redshift for analytical and financial reporting needs.
  • Lead technical decision-making around data consistency, idempotency, backfills, and correction workflows for financially sensitive systems.
  • Improve system observability and reliability by implementing monitoring, alerting, and tooling with Datadog to detect and resolve discrepancies quickly.
  • Identify and mitigate risks related to data integrity, performance, and regulatory compliance.
Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.
  • 6+ years of professional backend engineering experience, with ownership of business-critical systems in production.
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript and modern backend frameworks, preferably NestJS.
  • Strong experience designing backend services with complex domain logic and stateful workflows.
  • Deep proficiency with relational databases (e.g., Postgres), including schema design, transactional integrity, and query optimization.
  • Experience building APIs that support internal tools, reporting systems, and operational workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to reason about financial correctness, edge cases, and failure modes in distributed systems.
  • Strong experience operating backend systems in AWS.
  • Strong debugging and root-cause analysis skills, especially in data-heavy or financially sensitive domains.
  • Clear and effective communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ??Experience building commissions, billing, payments, or other financially sensitive systems.
  • Experience integrating with external partners, carriers, or CRMs such as Salesforce.
  • Experience using Datadog for application performance monitoring, logging, alerting, and production incident response.
  • Proficiency with Docker for containerization and deployment.
  • Prior experience in the healthcare or insurance industry, particularly with Medicare.
