Commercial HVAC Service Technician range Level 2-4
Position Summary:
The HVAC Service Technician is responsible for diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining commercial HVAC systems. This role supports equipment ranging from preventative maintenance work to complex systems up to 400 tons, including chillers, VRF systems, and water-cooled equipment. Technicians are expected to demonstrate increasing technical expertise, independence, and leadership as they progress within the role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair commercial HVAC systems, including large-scale equipment such as compressors, motors, chillers, and VRF systems.
- Perform refrigerant leak detection, recovery, charging, and refrigeration cycle diagnostics, including component repairs (TXVs, coils, etc.).
- Conduct electrical and controls troubleshooting, from basic low-voltage systems to advanced wiring and energy management systems.
- Install, retrofit, and replace commercial HVAC equipment and components.
- Perform preventative maintenance and identify potential system issues to ensure reliability and efficiency.
- Evaluate and optimize system performance, including airflow, ductwork, hydronics, VAV systems, economizers, and cooling towers.
- Service and replace major components such as coils, pumps, compressors, blower shafts, and bearings.
- Read and interpret electrical and mechanical schematics and technical documentation.
- Communicate with customers regarding system issues, solutions, and recommendations, including emergency service response.
- Follow all safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, proper refrigerant handling, and PPE requirements.
- Mentor and support junior technicians, contributing to team development and performance.
Scope & Progression:
Technicians in this role are expected to progressively handle more complex commercial systems and diagnostics, advancing from preventative maintenance responsibilities to large-scale and industrial system expertise, while also taking on increased leadership and mentorship responsibilities.

- Maintain an efficiency rate of 85%+ for all service calls and tasks.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.
- Complete tasks on time and in adherence to company policies, procedures, and industry standards.
- Provide exceptional customer service by effectively communicating technical issues and solutions.
- Minimum of 3 years of industry experience
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in diverse environments.
- Proficient in reading and understanding schematics.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong commitment to safety and quality.
Education and Certifications:
- Required:
- EPA Universal Certification
- Preferred/Advanced:
- OSHA 10
- NATE Certification
- OEM and VRF Training
- BAS and PLC Training
- Chiller and Advanced Refrigeration Certifications
- CFC/HCFC/HFC Certifications
Experience Levels:
- L2 (Tech): Commercial experience; able to troubleshoot up to 15 tons.
- L3 (Tech): Commercial expertise; troubleshoot systems up to 50 tons.
- L4 (Tech): Large commercial/chiller tech; troubleshoot up to 400 tons.
