The Shipyard Project Manager – Compartment Closeout is responsible for end-to-end planning, coordination, and execution of compartment closeout activities on a new-construction vessel program. This role owns compartment readiness from active production through final closeout and turnover, ensuring each space is complete, compliant, clean, and configuration-controlled prior to insulation, decking, joiner work, or permanent structural closure.
This position operates as the single point of accountability for compartment completion, coordinating engineering, production, quality, coatings, and test stakeholders to prevent premature closeout, downstream rework, access loss, and inspection failures. The successful candidate is a deck-plate, execution-first project manager who understands shipyard sequencing and is comfortable holding the line when a compartment is not ready to close.
Key Responsibilities
Compartment Closeout Planning & Ownership
Own assigned compartments from “work-in-progress” through final closeout and turnover
Plan and manage closeout sequencing in coordination with production schedules
Maintain compartment closeout status, readiness tracking, and punch-list resolution
Approve or reject compartment closeout based on readiness, compliance, and risk
Prevent premature closure of compartments with open work, deficiencies, or documentation gaps
Field Execution & Physical Verification
Lead and conduct onboard walkdowns to verify completion of:
Structural work (welds, penetrations, foundations)
Piping, HVAC, electrical, and outfit installations
Required access, clearances, labeling, and maintainability
Verify drains, bilges, ventilation paths, and access routes are complete and unobstructed
Coordinate corrective actions with trades and supervision to achieve readiness
Watertight, Boundary, & Integrity Control
Manage verification of watertight boundaries, collars, sleeves, doors, hatches, and penetrations
Confirm fire boundaries (as applicable) are installed per drawings and standards
Ensure boundary integrity is achieved prior to insulation or permanent closeout
Coatings, Preservation & Cleanliness Management
Coordinate with coatings and preservation teams to confirm surface prep and coatings are complete
Ensure compartments are clean, free of debris, oil, and FOD prior to closeout
Verify equipment protection and preservation are in place before access is lost
Documentation & Configuration Management
Ensure as-built conditions align with drawings and approved work packages
Drive closure of NCRs, RFIs, and ECNs affecting compartment readiness
Complete and approve compartment closeout checklists and turnover documentation
Protect configuration control once compartments are closed and inaccessible
Coordination & Stakeholder Communication
Interface daily with production, engineering, QA, coatings, electrical, piping, and test teams
Communicate readiness status, deficiencies, and risks clearly to supervisors and management
Escalate issues with facts, photos, and documented impacts—not opinion
Support test and trials readiness by ensuring compartments meet integrity and access requirements
Required Knowledge & Skills
Shipyard & Technical Knowledge
Shipboard compartments and naming conventions
Structural, piping, HVAC, and electrical installation fundamentals
Ability to interpret:
Structural drawings
P&IDs
Electrical one-lines and cable schedules
Compartment arrangement and system drawings
Compliance & Inspection Awareness
Familiarity with shipyard quality practices
Understanding of watertight integrity and boundary requirements
Working knowledge of fire boundary concepts
Experience supporting inspections and test readiness (USCG, ABS, Navy, or Owner reps)
Execution & Project Management Skills
Strong attention to detail and follow-through
Confidence to delay or stop closeout when requirements are not met
Ability to prioritize critical closeout items versus deferrable work
Organized, checklist-driven, and disciplined with documentation and tracking
Strong field communication and coordination skills
Required Experience & Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Marine, Mechanical, Structural, Electrical) or equivalent shipyard experience
5+ years experience in shipbuilding, vessel construction, or major refit
Proven experience managing deck-plate execution, inspections, or production closeout
Comfortable working onboard vessels in active construction environments
U.S. Citizenship (program requirement)
Preferred Experience
New construction vessel programs
Aluminum vessel construction
Prior compartment closeout, production management, QA, or superintendent roles
Experience supporting military or government vessel programs
