The OT Security Engineer is responsible for securing Fervo’s industrial control systems, including SCADA, PLCs, HMIs, and associated control networks. This role partners closely with engineering, operations, and IT teams to ensure cybersecurity is built into the design, deployment, and ongoing operation of all OT systems.
Success in this role requires strong technical fundamentals in OT networking and security architecture, comfort working in mixed IT/OT environments, and a pragmatic approach to risk management in execution-heavy, safety-critical systems.
Responsibilities
OT Security Architecture & Engineering
- Design and implement secure OT network architectures, including segmentation, firewalls, DMZs, and secure remote access
- Integrate cybersecurity controls into ICS and SCADA systems in alignment with standards such as IEC 62443 and NIST 800-82
- Develop and apply hardening standards for OT endpoints, including PLCs, HMIs, RTUs, and control servers
- Partner with automation and controls engineers to embed security into system designs, upgrades, and expansions
Monitoring, Detection & Incident Response
- Deploy and manage OT-focused security monitoring and visibility tools across control networks
- Implement and tune logging, intrusion detection, and anomaly detection for OT environments
- Collaborate with security operations teams to investigate, triage, and respond to OT security events
- Support forensic analysis, recovery, and post-incident review following cybersecurity events impacting OT systems
Risk Management, Testing & Compliance
- Perform risk assessments and threat modeling for OT systems and development projects
- Coordinate vulnerability assessments and testing with OT stakeholders and vendors in a safe, controlled manner
- Support compliance with applicable cybersecurity frameworks and regulatory requirements
- Maintain documentation and support internal and third-party audits, including remediation tracking
- Cross-Functional Collaboration & Enablement
- Lead security reviews for new OT deployments, vendor systems, and third-party integrations
- Work with operations teams to balance cybersecurity controls with safety, availability, and operational efficiency
- Train and support field engineers and operators on OT security best practices and secure system usage
- Contribute to the development of scalable OT security standards, patterns, and best practices across Fervo
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, cybersecurity, computer science, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience)
- 4+ years of experience in cybersecurity, with at least 2 years focused on OT or industrial control systems
- Strong understanding of industrial control environments, including SCADA systems, PLCs, HMIs, and control networks
- Working knowledge of industrial protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, OPC-UA, or PROFINET
- Experience designing and securing networks using segmentation models (e.g., Purdue Model)
- Familiarity with OT security monitoring, detection, or visibility platforms
- Ability to operate effectively in execution-focused environments where system uptime and safety are critical
Preferred
- Experience working in energy, utilities, oil & gas, manufacturing, or other critical infrastructure sectors
- Hands-on experience with automation platforms from vendors such as Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider, or ABB
- Experience implementing secure remote access and managing third-party vendor connectivity in OT environments
- Professional certifications such as GICSP, GRID, CISSP, or ISA/IEC 62443
- Experience supporting greenfield or first-of-a-kind industrial system deployments
