The Social Network and Science SETA provides scientific, technical, programmatic, and administrative support to the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Warfighter Performance Department (Code 34). This role supports ONR’s Science and Technology (S&T) objectives by enabling the planning, execution, oversight, and transition of social, behavioral, and information-related research efforts that enhance naval warfighter performance.
The position requires deep understanding of the national security and international information environment and how social and behavioral science research contributes tools, technologies, and training to counter adversarial influence and information-based threats. The SETA operates as a trusted advisor to Program Officers and interfaces routinely with senior Navy and Marine Corps leadership, DoD stakeholders, government agencies, academia, industry, and international partners. Technical focus areas align with ONR research domains, including analytics, modeling and simulation, and local and regional social network dynamics.
Relevant experiences may include prior military work in PAO/IO/MILDEC areas or understanding military operations generally. Candidates with Social Network Analysis knowledge and skills are highly desired.
- Active SECRET level clearance or ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET level clearance.
- Education & Experience (one of the following):
- PhD or ScD from an accredited institution plus 3 years of relevant experience
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution plus 5 years of relevant experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution plus 7 years of relevant experience
- Relevant disciplines include: Sociology, Psychology, Communications, or other related social science fields
- Demonstrated ability to:
- Read, analyze, and synthesize highly technical material
- Summarize complex research into clear, actionable insights
- Communicate visually using charts, infographics, and other information products
- Minimum 2 years of experience supporting DoD R&D programs as a civilian, military member, or contractor.
- Working knowledge of DoD S&T programs, including familiarity with research portfolios, technology development lifecycles, and the roles and responsibilities of Program Officers.
- Experience interpreting DoD policy, guidance, legislation, and Congressional language related to research programs.
- Strong public speaking and copy-editing skills.
- Experience tracking communications, action items, and tasking across stakeholders.
- Ability to operate independently in a complex, fast-paced research environment while managing multiple priorities and stakeholders.
- Ability to translate complex technical, analytical, and programmatic information into decision-relevant insights for senior Navy and DoD leadership, and effectively bridge communication between technical researchers, program managers, and non-technical audiences.
- Experience handling classified materials and supporting secure meetings and briefings.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, Outlook)
