Reports to: Assistant Circulation Supervisor

Pay: Starting at $14.18

Status: Non-Exempt


Job Summary:

Incumbents in this position are expected to sort returned material according to classification code and return material to the shelves, files or other designated areas as required. Library Aides will monitor shelving and other areas to verify that material is displayed in its correct order according to Library standards. Incumbents will also assist professional library staff with inquiries and refer patrons to professional library staff when needed.

Essential Job Functions:


Customer Support

  1. Greets and assists patrons throughout the entire library.
  2. Enforces library policies using a polite and professional approach and alerts appropriate staff members for assistance, completing interaction or incident report as directed.
  3. Assist patrons by assessing their needs and referring them to appropriate staff as needed.

Reshelving

  1. Sorts material in reshelving areas or on carts to prepare them for reshelving.
  2. Sorts and shelves returned material according to classification code and need for repair, and return them to shelves, files or other designated storage area.
  3. Maintains neat and orderly appearance of material on shelves by straightening material and cleaning shelves. 
  4. Shelf reading of material to ensure that books are in correct order.
  5. Assists with shifting material as assigned.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Provides guidance and /or training to volunteers or others who assist with shelving.
  2. Stays informed of library news and events via review of all forms of library communication: website; email; meeting notes.
  3. Performs opening and closing library duties during corresponding shift.


Requirements

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  1. Ability to accurately sort and shelve material alphabetically and numerically.
  2. Ability to function independently without close supervision.
  3. Ability to perform detailed work in a highly detailed manner.
  4. Ability to understand and follow detailed written and verbal instructions.
  5. Must be able to read, write and understand the English language
  6. Ability to maintain discretion in handling confidential library matters.
  7. Ability to operate a variety of library equipment including a computer and copy machine.
  8. The ability to bend, crouch, lift, stand for extended periods of time, and push heavy carts and bins.
  9. Visual acuity and physical skills necessary to retrieve library materials from shelves and storage areas, maintain library materials and operate equipment. The incumbent is required to have the physical ability to push/pull fully loaded book carts and lift/carry materials weighing up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions:

  1. Generally, will work within a normal office environment with minimal discomfort due to extreme temperatures, dust, and noise.
  2. Job requires sitting, standing, walking, pushing, bending, reaching, lifting, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Some activities are of a repetitive nature.
  3. Employees may interact with the public or staff in interpreting and enforcing library policies and procedures. At times, this may include personally challenging situations with disgruntled individuals. 
  4. Ability to work a variety of hours within normal operations including evenings and both weekend days. Applicants will work max 20 hours per week.

Education, Experience and Training:

  1. Basic knowledge typically associated with the completion of a high school diploma.
  2. Must be at least 18 years of age at employment.
  3. Prior experience in a public library or comparable customer service experience. (Preferred)
