 Doctoral Writing Center Lead 



Job Summary: 


The Doctoral Writing Center Lead is a full-time leadership position responsible for overseeing the daily operations,

quality assurance, and professional development of the Doctoral Writing Center team. This role directly supervises

Doctoral Writing Center Specialists and ensures the delivery of high-quality, timely, and rigorous dissertation-level

writing and research support to doctoral students across all programs.


In addition to student-facing services, the Lead oversees Formatting Committee review workflows for dissertation and

doctoral research project candidates, coordinates internal scholarly submission reviews for faculty, and collaborates

with the Westcliff International Journal of Applied Research (WIJAR) to support internal manuscript readiness and pre-

submission review. The Lead works closely with the Academic Success Manager to scale services, strengthen

feedback consistency, uphold institutional standards (APA, academic integrity, responsible AI use), and continuously

improve doctoral and faculty scholarly outcomes.


  • Provide direct leadership, supervision, and performance management of Doctoral Writing Center Specialists.
  • Ensure consistent delivery of high-quality, doctoral-level writing and research support.
  • Maintain operational oversight of workflows, caseloads, and turnaround times.
  • Uphold institutional standards for academic integrity, responsible AI use, and ethical research writing.
  • Develop and implement training, onboarding, and professional development for specialists.
  • Lead quality assurance review of specialist feedback for rigor, clarity, and scholarly accuracy.
  • Collaborate with the Academic Success Manager, doctoral faculty, and academic leadership to support doctoral persistence and progress.
  • Contribute to strategic planning, reporting, and program development related to doctoral academic support.
  • Oversee dissertation and doctoral research project formatting committee review processes.
  • Coordinate internal scholarly submission reviews for faculty and institutional research projects.
  •  Collaborate with WIJAR as needed to provide internal manuscript readiness and pre-submission review.

Duties: 

  • Supervise, coach, evaluate, and support a team of Doctoral Writing Center Specialists.
  • Review specialist feedback regularly to ensure consistency, depth, and pedagogical alignment.
  • Monitor daily operations of asynchronous and synchronous doctoral writing support.
  • Manage overflow escalation between the Writing Center and Doctoral Writing Center.
  • Provide advanced support or intervention for complex or high-risk doctoral writing cases.
  • Enforce APA 7th edition standards at the dissertation level.
  • Oversee Formatting Committee workflows, reviewer assignments, compliance checks, and final clearance processes for dissertation and doctoral research project candidates.
  • Review and coordinate general scholarly submissions for faculty, including articles, proposals, and internal research outputs.
  • Partner with WIJAR editors and leadership to conduct internal manuscript readiness reviews prior to journal submission.
  • Lead development of doctoral writing resources, workshops, bootcamps, and training materials.
  • Track and report on student engagement, turnaround times, feedback quality, and writing progress.
  • Support academic integrity initiatives related to citation practice, plagiarism prevention, and AI-assisted writing.
  • Participate in institutional projects related to doctoral success, retention, and accreditation.
  • Facilitate team meetings and professional learning activities.
  • Use Moodle, Zoom, Microsoft Word, and Google Workspace effectively to manage services and communication.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of Academic Success and Doctoral Education.
  • Teaching and Curriculum Development
  • Teach assigned doctoral-level courses (3 courses per year) priority given to DOC 700 series
  •  Participate in the development and update of course materials in alignment with program learning outcomes and current academic standards.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students to support scholarly development.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and engaging online and/or in-person learning environment.
  • Mentor doctoral students in their development as scholars and practitioners.

Requirements: 

  • Earned PhD from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in doctoral-level writing support, academic editing, dissertation coaching, graduate instruction, or related academic roles.
  • Prior experience supervising or mentoring academic professionals.
  • Demonstrated expertise in APA 7th edition and dissertation-level academic writing.
  • Experience working with multilingual, international, and diverse student populations.
  • Expertise in quantitative research methodologies.
  • Experience supporting prospectus, proposal, IRB, and dissertation milestones.
  • Prior leadership in a Writing Center, Doctoral Support Center, Graduate Office, or similar academic unit.
  • Certification or formal training in academic editing, TESOL, coaching, or faculty development.
  • Experience supporting faculty scholarship, journal submissions, or research publication workflows.
  • Experience in fully online or distance doctoral education environments.
