Database Operations Manager
India #1 - Remote, IND
Description

Job Summary:

The Database Operations Manager is accountable for the operational health, performance, recoverability, and day-to-day readiness of the company’s Microsoft SQL Server environment that powers revenue-generating eDiscovery platforms such as Relativity, Infinnium 4iG, QuikData, and more. This role is a leader that combines hands-on technical capability with strong operational leadership and vendor management, directing a managed DBA services partner that provides 24x7 coverage.

The Database Operations Manager operates with high autonomy, partners closely with Infrastructure Operations and Application Operations, and drives ongoing improvements in performance, monitoring, access controls, and automation across a largely standardized SQL Server 2022 estate running primarily on-prem with some AWS. This role reports to the Director, IaaS Operations as a member of the global operations team.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Vendor Management & Accountability: Own the managed DBA services vendor relationship, including work intake, prioritization, escalation, quality control, and acceptance of deliverables; ensure the vendor provides effective 24x7 operational coverage and drives measurable outcomes.
  • Support Leadership: Serve as the escalation point for high-impact database performance incidents (e.g., slow queries, full-text search degradation, poor I/O performance), including hands-on troubleshooting and remediation when required to protect application availability and end-user experience.
  • Database Operations Ownership: Own database operations outcomes including deployments, patching and upgrades, availability, stability, operational risk management, and day-to-day operations for Microsoft SQL Server instances, with fractional responsibilities for Postgres and Elasticsearch.
  • Change Management: Direct and coordinate database operational activities during monthly maintenance windows; participate in CAB processes and ensure operational readiness, change validation, and appropriate documentation.
  • Backup, Recovery, and Resilience: Own database backup and recovery outcomes using native SQL Server tooling and operationalize recovery testing and documentation to support RPO/RTO objectives.
  • Security & Compliance: Own database access provisioning and operational enforcement of least privilege/RBAC; drive consistency, implement access review processes, and partner with the Security team in reviewing vulnerability findings, evidence collection processes, and remediation of security vulnerabilities, including in FedRAMP-regulated environments.
  • Monitoring & Alerting: Build and improve operational visibility by defining dashboards/alerts and maturing monitoring practices, leveraging vendor tooling and internal observability platforms (e.g., Grafana Cloud).
  • Automation Stewardship: Steward and improve upon the existing automation ecosystem, improving consistency, documentation, maintainability, and operational safety.
  • Capacity Planning: Drive capacity and cost initiatives by identifying constraints, prioritizing highest-impact remediation, and managing vendor-hour utilization to reduce overages and improve predictability.
  • Documentation: Establish and maintain runbooks, operational procedures, and escalation paths for database operations, including vendor handoffs, internal escalation protocols, and repeatable troubleshooting guidance.
  • Escalation Availability: Respond to critical alerts during the working day, and after hours per escalation procedure.
Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, or related field or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience: 5+ years of progressive responsibility supporting production database operations for Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Ability to work with high autonomy and self-direct priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Ability to manage vendor relationships assertively and professionally, including pushing back, requiring evidence, and holding work to defined acceptance criteria.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Practical understanding of information technology concepts, protocols, industry best practices and ITIL processes.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate with other teams across multiple time zones and geographies.
  • Occasionally working evenings or weekends as required for scheduled or emergency maintenance.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong Microsoft SQL Server expertise.
  • Proven ability to diagnose and remediate performance issues such as slow queries, blocking/locking, and indexing/statistics considerations.
  • Understanding of storage and I/O performance as they relate to SQL Server.
  • Strong working knowledge of T-SQL scripting and development.
  • Working knowledge of PowerShell scripting.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Certifications: ITIL v3 or ITIL v4 Foundations certifications.
  • Experience building operational metrics from scratch (SLAs/SLOs, KPI reporting, incident and change success metrics).
  • Experience implementing monitoring/observability for databases (Grafana, Datadog, New Relic, SQL monitoring suites, etc.).
  • Experience supporting large multi-tenant SQL environments and very large databases (multi-TB).

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
