JOB SUMMARY
Primarily responsible for managing and maintaining Pero Transport, LLC’s PA fleet in good operating condition so the company can meet its distribution objectives efficiently and cost- effectively. The Assistant Fleet Manager will be responsible for all records, maintenance, and equipment cost control. This position will be in constant communication with the Fleet Manager based out of company headquarters to advise him/her of equipment and personnel availability, and all fleet needs and repairs. The Assistant Fleet Manager will also work in collaboration with the Compliance Manager insuring the safe and effective management of Pero Transport’s fleet of trucks, and will manage personnel in the shop located in PA.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Daily coordination of equipment and personnel availability to provide services (vehicle mechanical inspections, mechanical repairs, driver communication).
- Oversees and approves administrative processing of paperwork required in the acquisition or disposal of equipment (i.e. title, registration, license, etc.)
- Plans, organizes, and directs equipment maintenance, repair, and disposal while continually updating and maintaining all equipment maintenance files.
- Reviews equipment maintenance invoices to ensure that proper maintenance was performed.
- Transports equipment as required in the acquisition and repair of vehicles.
- Oversees the vehicle emissions program to comply with federal and state mandates.
- Maintain a database of sales, registration, inspections, and maintenance of the fleet.
- Monitor and ensure the fleet operates in compliance with local and state rules and regulations.
- Communicate and oversee the proper addition of new equipment into the data management system (Famous) to ensure appropriate allocation of expenses to all equipment.
- Provide direction and effectively communicate to the Fleet Manager for fleet replacements, requirements, and needs.
- Manage shop personnel in the PA shop, and mechanics’ schedule, ensuring all PM’s and proper repairs are made in an efficient and timely manner
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- 5+ years of experience in heavy-diesel equipment, safety certifications, and training
- CDL Class A required
- Expertise in transportation equipment and mechanics.
- Knowledge of all DOT, state, and federal requirements, policies, and procedures.
- Analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage personnel
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to learn and understand transportation software systems and technologies
- Participate in various workshops and educational programs to maintain knowledge on all industry regulations and rules
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Works in a combination of office, garage, and outdoor environments, including vehicle storage, maintenance, and operational areas.
- Standard business hours with flexibility required; may involve early mornings, evenings, weekends, or on-call availability to respond to fleet issues or emergencies.
- Frequent use of computers, fleet management software, and communication devices for reporting, scheduling, and coordination.
- Regular interaction with drivers, maintenance staff, vendors, and management to ensure smooth fleet operations.
- Exposure to varying conditions, including noise, temperature fluctuations, outdoor weather, and active vehicle areas.
- Fast-paced environment requiring attention to detail, multitasking, and problem-solving under moderate pressure.
- Occasional travel to satellite locations, maintenance facilities, or job sites as needed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to sit for extended periods while performing administrative and planning tasks, with frequent standing and walking throughout fleet and garage areas.
- Ability to inspect, monitor, and move around vehicles, maintenance areas, and outdoor operational sites.
- Capability to lift, carry, push, or pull vehicle parts, tools, or equipment weighing up to 25–50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Visual acuity required to read reports, inspect vehicles, review maintenance logs, and assess operational conditions.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in person, by phone, and via electronic platforms.
- Manual dexterity to operate computers, handheld devices, and basic garage or vehicle equipment.
- Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including noise, temperature extremes, and outdoor weather.
- Stamina to work extended or flexible hours during peak fleet operations, emergencies, or vehicle maintenance periods.
