Summer Camp Counselor

Penobscot Bay YMCA | Seasonal (June–August 2026)

No previous camp experience required — we provide training!


The Details

• $18/hour starting pay
• $19/hour with lifeguard certification (we can help you get certified!)
• June 15 – August 15
• Up to 40 hours per week
• Five required training evenings (5:00–9:00 PM, dates TBD)
• Daytime hours between 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM (rotating shifts)

Job Requirements


Essential Responsibilities

• Supervise and actively engage a group of children throughout the camp day
• Plan and lead fun, age-appropriate activities that reflect YMCA values
• Maintain a safe, clean, and positive camp environment
• Attend required staff meetings and trainings
• Follow YMCA policies related to safety, medical needs, behavior guidance, child abuse prevention, and emergencies
• Communicate positively and professionally with parents, campers, and fellow staff
• Perform other duties as needed to support a successful camp season


Qualifications

• Preferred experience working with children (camp, babysitting, sports, tutoring, etc.)
• Skills or interests in areas such as sports, outdoor recreation, arts & crafts, music, aquatics, or games are a plus
• Must be at least 16 years old (minimum age may vary based on state law and YMCA policies)
• CPR, First Aid, AED, and Child Abuse Prevention training required within 30 days of hire (training provided)


Physical Requirements

This is an active job! Counselors should be able to:

• Lead and participate in outdoor and indoor activities
• Stand, walk, and move for extended periods
• Participate in games, sports, and group activities
