Principal Software Engineer - THREE
Fully Remote THREE Software Development
Job Type
Full-time
Description

THREE is building a new kind of small business insurance. We combine the coverages small businesses need into a single, transparent policy — replacing the patchwork of confusing products the industry has sold for decades. We're a small, technical team backed by Berkshire Hathaway. We move fast, pick the best tools available, invest heavily in automation, and optimize relentlessly for shipping meaningful features.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you'll be one of the most senior technical voices on our team. You'll architect and build across our underwriting engine, policy management systems, and customer-facing tools, making foundational decisions about how our platform scales and evolves. This isn't a role where you'll write design docs that collect dust. You'll be hands-on, shipping production code regularly while raising the bar for how the team builds software.

You'll be a great fit if you:

  • Want real ownership over architecture and technical direction.
  • Move fast and believe that shipping and iterating beats planning in a vacuum.
  • Reach for the best tools available, including AI-assisted development, modern frameworks, and managed infrastructure.
  • Care deeply about well-tested, maintainable systems and hold the team to that standard.
  • Thrive with high autonomy and do your best work when you're trusted to figure out the right approach.
  • Want to see your code make a direct, measurable impact on the business.
  • Stay on top of changes in the evolving software and AI ecosystems.

Job Responsibilities

  • Drive architectural decisions and contribute to long-term technical strategy in partnership with engineering leadership
  • Own complex feature development end-to-end, from initial planning through delivery and observability
  • Set engineering standards and promote best practices in code quality, testing, documentation, and system design
  • Collaborate with product, design, and other technical stakeholders to shape roadmaps and scope technical initiatives
  • Mentor engineers across the team and provide technical leadership through code reviews, design discussions, and knowledge sharing
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, scaling challenges, and system reliability issues
  • Advocate for and contribute to improved developer experience through tooling, automation, and process refinement
Requirements
  • 8+ years of professional experience building and scaling modern web applications and distributed systems
  • 1+ years of experience contributing in a principal technical role, with a proven track record of technical leadership and ownership on complex projects and systems
  • Experience leveraging AI tools to improve engineering productivity and quality
  • Expertise in backend development using a modern framework such as Django, NextJS, or similar
  • Strong full-stack fluency with the ability to contribute meaningfully in React or similar frontend frameworks
  • Strong systems design and architectural skills, with a focus on performance, reliability, and maintainability
  • Deep understanding of APIs, data modeling, asynchronous workflows, monoliths versus pinpoint solutions, and service-oriented architecture
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred, AWS/GCP acceptable), infrastructure-as-code, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Clear, confident communication skills and the ability to influence cross-functional partners

Preferred Knowledge & Experience:

  • Experience integrating with insurance platforms, financial systems, or similar enterprise-grade solutions
  • Well-versed in Python and Typescript (open to Ruby, Golang, etc.)
  • Familiarity with our tech stack – Azure, Django, React, Temporal, Terraform
  • Experience with workflows that coordinate many third-party integrations
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools to streamline integration testing
