Camp Acorn - Somerset Hills YMCA - June 22 through August 28

Camp Acorn is seeking a Camp Therapist to support the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Therapist primary responsibility is to execute a safe and fun summer experience for the children within their assigned group. Working under the direction of the Camp Leadership Team, in this role, it is imperative to be able to make camp the best experience a child could ever dream of and will look back and remember for years to come. Camp Counselors are role models for leadership, demonstrating our core values of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility, and being fun, exciting individuals with good spirit. Specific responsibilities will include:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Working collaboratively with other counselors to lead a group of 15-30 children.
  • Working with other counselors to develop and execute fun and educational activities throughout the week.
  • Encouraging campers to achieve goals in personal development like being a leader, team player, speaking in front of peers, etc.
  • Swimming daily with campers to have fun, assist in daily swim lessons, and ensure safety for all.
  • Showing camp spirit every day by participating in camp traditions, singing camp songs, cheering on campers and staff, playing camp wide games, and more.
  • Maintaining safety at all times by knowing every camper by name, knowing who you are responsible for at all times, maintaining proper ratios, carrying first aid supplies at all times, being responsive on a walkie-talkie system, etc.
  • Participating in all camp activities. Must be able and willing to be active, run around, get messy, and want to make the experience each day one to remember.

SAFETY

  • Host regularly-scheduled staff meetings  
  • Attend and complete all required trainings.
  • At all times uphold camp safety standards. Will understand and practice risk management and disaster policies and procedures.? 
  • Must follow all Association Aquatics Policy Guidelines. 
  • Establish designated assignments for camp staff for aquatic activities. Help expedite arrival and departure from the pool (i.e. dressing rooms, etc.).  
  • Follow all YMCA, ACA, and NJ Licensing standards and procedures to ensure the safest and best quality camp and to help maintain ACA accreditation.?? 
  • Secure and submit all accident reports. 
  • Report all immediate concerns to Senior Director, Branch Leadership, or nearest supervisor. 
  • Help to ensure supervision, safety, expedient procedures and fun activities on the bus. Lead bus songs, stories and games. 

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Always maintain a professional demeanor, as you are a representative of the YMCA. 
  • Wear Camp T-shirt daily. 
  • Maintain positive attitude, responsibility and self-motivation. Be punctual and reliable. 
  • Create a positive and nurturing learning environment to instill youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. 
  • Uphold GSCY’s More Quality At The Y principles at all times.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to help individuals with special needs
  • Previous experience working with children preferably in a day camp setting, with a minimum of two previous camp seasons.  
  • At least 18 years of age. 
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date. 
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred. 

 WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations (depending upon the programs). 
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme heat and humidity. 
  • Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid 
  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
