Summary/Objective
The Lead Database and Application Engineer is a hands-on technical leader responsible for both executing critical work and owning technical direction for enterprise databases, integrations, analytics, and application connectivity. This role operates as a player–coach, delivering complex solutions personally while setting standards, guiding design decisions, and ensuring scalable, secure outcomes across the domain. The position ensures platform stability, scalability, and continuous improvement in alignment with business objectives and enterprise standards, while guaranteeing that releases are delivered on schedule, meet quality benchmarks, and support organizational goals.
The position partners closely with application teams, data teams, security, and infrastructure to deliver reliable, well-architected solutions aligned with business needs.
Core Job Duties
Execution & Delivery (Hands-On)
- Personally design, build, and support complex integrations using Boomi and MuleSoft
- Develop and optimize T-SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, and views
- Build and support Microsoft Fabric pipelines, Lakehouse models, and analytics workloads
- Support and guide Power BI or Tableau datasets, semantic models, and reporting solutions
- Troubleshoot and resolve high-impact production issues across databases, integrations, and applications
- Ensure secure handling of enterprise data, including access controls and data protection
Technical Ownership & Direction
- Own end-to-end technical decisions for database, integration, and analytics solutions within the domain
- Define, document, and enforce:
- Integration patterns and standards
- Database design and performance best practices
- Data security, governance, and access standards
- Provide architectural guidance for application-to-application and application-to-database integrations
- Make informed tradeoff decisions balancing performance, scalability, cost, and security
- Ensure data platforms support downstream analytics, data science, and AI use cases
- Act as the escalation point for complex or cross-system technical challenges
Leadership & Collaboration
- Serve as technical lead for projects and initiatives
- Mentor Senior and junior engineers through guidance, reviews, and hands-on support
- Partner with application development, data, security, and infrastructure teams
- Participate in solution reviews, vendor discussions, and technology evaluations
- Maintain clear and accurate documentation for databases, integrations, data flows, and dependencies
Required Skills & Experience
- 8–12 years of experience in database and application engineering, including experience acting as a hands-on technical lead responsible for delivery, design decisions, and end-to-end ownership of solutions
- Strong experience in enterprise database and application engineering
- Hands-on expertise with one of the following:
- Boomi (AtomSphere)
- MuleSoft (Anypoint Platform)
- Azure Logic Apps
- Experience with Microsoft Fabric, including data pipelines, Lakehouse, or analytics workloads
- Strong understanding of relational database concepts and data modeling
- Development expertise focused on T-SQL, including:
- Writing and optimizing complex queries
- Developing stored procedures, functions, and views
- Diagnosing and resolving performance issues
- Experience with Power BI or Tableau, including:
- Semantic models and datasets
- Supporting enterprise analytics consumption
- Experience with cloud platforms, including Microsoft Azure and/or AWS, such as:
- Designing and supporting cloud-based databases and application platforms
- Working with cloud identity, networking, and security concepts as they relate to database and application access
- Supporting hybrid cloud architectures for enterprise applications, integrations, and data platforms
- Working knowledge of APIs, REST services, and data formats (JSON, XML)
- Strong data security knowledge, including:
- Data classification and handling standards
- Role-based access control and least-privilege principles
- Securing data in transit and at rest
- Experience supporting cloud and hybrid environments
- Proven analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a Lead or Senior technical role
- Familiarity with Salesforce, including integrations and data synchronization
- Experience integrating SaaS platforms with enterprise databases and applications
- Knowledge of data science and AI concepts, including:
- Data preparation and feature engineering
- Machine learning and predictive analytics use cases
- Supporting or integrating AI/ML solutions with enterprise data platforms
- Exposure to analytics, AI, or advanced data workloads within Microsoft Fabric or similar platforms
- Knowledge of data governance, compliance, auditing, and security frameworks
- Familiarity with DevOps or CI/CD concepts related to data pipelines and integrations
Soft Skills
- Ability to lead through execution and technical credibility
- Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Comfortable making and defending technical decisions
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities
- Collaborative mindset with a strong focus on business outcomes
