JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Math Specialist
Employment Classification: Full-time, Salary, Exempt, Certificated (12 months)
Reports to: Assistant Head of School
Anticipated Start Date: June 2026
Position Summary: The Math Specialist plays a critical role in supporting student achievement by enhancing math instruction and fostering a culture of mathematical thinking. This position focuses on leading professional development for math teachers and providing targeted support to students, with a particular emphasis on meeting the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs). The Math Specialist collaborates closely with administration and educators to implement effective strategies, develop differentiated instructional practices, and ensure equitable access to high-quality literacy education for all students.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
- Coaching: Provide ongoing, individualized instructional support and coaching math and other teachers, focusing on effective math pedagogical practices, teaching up, and differentiating instruction.
- Best Practices: Promote research-based, high-leverage instructional strategies, such as the use of math discourse, conceptual understanding, problem-solving, and the effective use of manipulatives.
- Facilitation: Collaborate with the Assistant Head of School and lead high-quality, targeted professional development sessions for staff on curriculum, differentiated instruction, assessment strategies, and other relevant math topics.
- Learning Environment: Help teachers create engaging, joyful, and mathematically rich classroom environments.
- Progress Monitoring: Analyze student achievement data (i.e.SBAC, NWEA), to guide instruction and identify needs.
- Direct Math Support: Teach a math support elective and oversee math tutoring programs.
- Documentation: Review and maintain a clear and coherent scope and sequence for 7th through 12th grade math.
Knowledge, Skill, and Experience Requirements:
- Valid California Clear Single Subject Teaching Credential with English Learner Authorization (CLAD, BCLAD, ELD, or Bilingual Certificate of Competence).
- Minimum of five (5) years of successful full-time teaching experience in mathematics, preferably with grades 7–12 students and English Language Learners.
- Demonstrated knowledge of literacy development, effective instructional strategies, and assessment practices, particularly for diverse learners.
- Experience providing instructional coaching and/or facilitating professional development for teachers, instructional assistants, and/or administrators with an understanding of adult learning principles and coaching structures.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, administrators, and school staff.
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license, proof of automobile insurance, and the ability to obtain DMV clearance.
- Ability to successfully complete all pre-employment requirements, including criminal background clearance (DOJ/FBI fingerprinting), TB clearance, drug screening, and verification of previous employment.

Working Environment/Physical Requirements:
- Primarily a classroom environment. Position may require use of personal vehicle. Physical requirements include standing, sitting, typing, bending and lifting up to approximately 50 lbs. (i.e. tables, chairs, food, water, etc.)
Modification to work schedule may be made based on need of the Academy.
