Purpose: Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Accountant manages the trial balance and leads monthly and year-end closing functions for Douglas County Libraries (DCL) and the Douglas County Libraries Foundation (DCLF). This role maintains reconciliations and sub-ledgers, supports annual audit and reporting processes, and collaborates with staff across the district to provide financial guidance and reporting support. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Accounting Operations (50%) 

  • Manages cash and modified accrual-based books for DCL and DCLF, ensuring accurate recording of financial transactions in compliance with GAAP/GASB and internal controls. 
  • Maintains sub-ledgers, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for trial balances; conducts annual fixed asset inventory. 
  • Leads monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, presenting results for review and recommending procedural improvements. 
  • Applies expert knowledge of governmental and fund accounting, performs analytical account reconciliation, and continuously improves processes for efficiency and accuracy. 
  • Supports research and implementation of new GASB (Governmental Accounting Standards Board) pronouncements. 
  • Provides Sage Intacct training and financial support to internal teams, managing sensitive data and delivering responsive service. 

Tax & Financial Reporting (25%) 

  • Prepares tax filings and ensures DCL and DCLF remain compliant with sales/use tax laws, 1099 requirements, and other applicable regulations. 
  • Develops audit schedules and fulfills Provided by Client (PBC) list requests, working directly with external auditors to support a successful audit process. 
  • Prepares and distributes monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; supports both unaudited and audited financial reporting. 
  • Supports preparation of the Annual Reports, including schedules and narratives, such as Management’s Discussion and Analysis and Notes to Financial Statement. 

Process Evaluation & Compliance (20%) 

  • Establishes and maintains documented procedures, working with internal customers to ensure effective implementation and operational alignment. 
  • Applies judgment and research to evaluate compliance with GAAP, GASB, FASB, and internal standards; stays current with evolving policies and best practices. 
  • Evaluates new software systems for compatibility and automation potential; supports execution of streamlined accounting processes. 
  • Serves as system administrator for Sage Intacct and Tallie overseeing configuration, maintenance, and user support. 
  • Manages multiple projects and deadlines in a high-volume environment while building strong working relationships and providing exceptional service. 

Other Duties (5%) 

  • Develops proficiency in relevant industry and organizational technology. 
  • Engages in DCL’s performance feedback process and meets departmental expectations, policies and procedures. 

Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Experience and Qualifications:  

Required 

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field 
  • Five years of general accounting experience with demonstrated competence in the areas of general ledger close, internal controls, financial analysis and reporting, and implementation of accounting policies and procedures required. 
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft 365 or other productivity, collaboration, and cloud-based services software. Ability to learn and apply new technologies.    

Preferred 

  • Master’s degree 
  • Sage Intacct experience, or similar ERP 
  • Avid experience, or similar AP Invoice and Payment system 
  • Tallie experience, or similar expense reporting software 
  • FinQuery experience 
  • Asset Edge experience, or comparable asset management software. 

A combination of experience and education will be considered. 


Physical Requirements:  Must have a reliable method of transportation between all DCL locations. Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to support a 7-day a week operation. Work at computer work-stations repetitively and for extended periods. Participate in meetings and events at various locations and at varied times throughout the day. Ability to read as small as 8pt font.
