JOB TITLE: Lifeguard
JOB SUMMARY: Maintain a safe, hygienic, pleasant environment in the swimming areas. Monitor all activity and conditions for safety hazards, unsafe behavior, and medical emergencies. Take any corrective action required, following established guidelines. Perform the daily required cleaning and maintenance of waterfront area.
REPORTS TO: Activities Manager & Pool Supervisor
PRIMARY DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:
1. Watch swimmers and swimming area for safety hazards, unsafe behavior, and medical emergencies. Take any corrective action necessary; follow proper emergency practice if needed.
2. Complete all necessary paperwork, including swimming areas records, guest charges, chemical orders, and maintenance log.
3. Clean all assigned areas: Wibit pieces, chairs, umbrellas, PFD Shed, Staff/Gear Shed and check in area.
4. Empty wastebaskets.
5. Transport towels to and from the laundry.
6. Clean/ Rake Sand Beach.
7. Fold and Replenish towels.
8. Check and maintain air levels in the Wibit pieces.
9. Prepare daily beach checklist for resident manager.
10. Maintain equipment in good condition. Observe and report any repair needed on equipment, furniture, or building.
11. Issue towels and PFD’s to guests as needed.
12. Check in guests upon arrival.
PRIOR EXPERIENCE: Previous lifeguarding work is preferred; training in other functions can be learned on the job. Beach guarding experience is preferred.
RESPONSIBLE FOR:
1. Swimmer safety.
2. Secure closing of swimming areas at days end.
3. Keys.
4. Personal uniforms.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be capable of working long shifts, remaining alert despite heat or sunshine. Must be able to monitor activity in swimming area, regardless of number of swimmers. Must have keen eyesight and hearing. Must be in good physical condition, in order to perform efficiently in swimming emergency. Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Schedule includes week days, weekends and holidays, shift work. Extended hours may be required. Work takes place in guest beach front swimming areas. Tasks are performed outdoors in variable weather conditions, including hot, cold, direct sun, and windy weather. Temperature can be extreme.
HAZARDS ENCOUNTERED:
1. Some cleaning agents and blood borne pathogens are hazardous if improperly handled or if contact with eyes, skin, or clothing occurs.
2. Care should be taken to avoid overexposure to the sun.
3. Injury or double drowning during water rescue attempt.

SKILLS REQUIRED: Ability to read, write, and follow and give written or verbal instructions. Proficiency in water safety and CPR procedures.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to read and write English is necessary. Current certification in CPR (cardio-pulmonary-resuscitation, and in lifesaving (water). Lifeguard certification, first aid, Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and AED certification required.
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS: See Skills Required, Educational Requirements. After training, proficiency in procedures for maintaining hygienic water quality.
PERSONALITY REQUIREMENTS: Must be observant and attentive. Must react quickly and appropriately to medical emergencies or unsafe conditions. Must be personable and friendly.
REQUIREMENTS: Must have a valid driver’s license.
