Job Summary

The Medical Director’s primary responsibility is to provide consultative medical services to our Life and Disability Underwriting and Claims departments. The position involves analyzing medical risks and evaluating mortality and morbidity implications for all medical conditions, consultation with underwriters regarding complex medical impairments and teaching through medical seminars for underwriters. This position will also assist in the review of contestable claims, serving as a resource for the Claims Department as needed.


Principal Responsibilities:

  • Provide timely, high quality medical underwriting consultations and assessments to life and disability underwriting teams.
  • Review and interpret electrocardiograms, stress tests, laboratory results and other diagnostic tests as requested by underwriting teams.
  • Review medical records of applicants for life and disability income insurance to assess mortality and morbidity risk
  • Provide ongoing education of underwriters through individual case discussions, explanations and clarifications provided in medical referrals.
  • Assist claims staff with the review of life and disability claims and medical conditions which require physician input regarding reasonableness of care, treatment and/or restrictions/limitations cause by said conditions.
  • Serve as a resource in the evaluation of contestable claims.
  • Provide training through lectures, training materials and participation in company-wide underwriter education programs as requested by management, but at least on a quarterly basis.
  • Conduct ongoing research as it relates to changes in mortality and morbidity and advise underwriters as to such changes.
  • Maintain current, in-depth knowledge of medical literature via ongoing journal review and other continuing education such as attendance at industry and non-industry medical conferences.
  • Demonstrate understanding of standard and excess mortality and morbidity as it relates to specific disease states.
  • Interact with Life and DI insurance agents and attending physicians as case needs warrant.
  • Provide feedback to and interact with various reinsurance providers related to Life and DI underwriting risks.
  • Research changes in medical survival trends and provide input into underwriting guidelines for in-house underwriting manuals.
  • Participate in decision/policy making committees as requested.
  • Participate in New Business projects as requested.

Anticipated Pay Rate: $150/hour.

Anticipated Hours: 5-10/month


Requirements
  • MD or DO degree required.
  • Current medical license in good standing, and appropriate continuing education credits as needed per year, required.
  • Experience in insurance medicine preferred, Certificate in Insurance Medicine a strong plus.
  • Exposure to Life and Disability underwriting.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a primary care specialty such as Family Practice or Internal Medicine preferred.
  • Board Certified in Internal Medicine.
  • Strong knowledge of general medicine, cardiology, oncology and geriatric medicine.
  • Experience with claims resulting from workplace issues, short- and long-term disability and workers compensation      injuries preferred.
