Fine Homebuilding has been a trusted authority in residential design and construction for decades. From our print magazine to our jobsite videos, we’re the go-to source of information and inspiration for design and construction professionals, owner-builders, and advanced DIYers. Many of them are also our authors and video contributors, and our team is dedicated to finding them and sharing their stories and expertise.
We're looking for a motivated video producer to grow with us and become a key contributor to everything we do. Experience shooting and editing video is essential. But just as important is someone who genuinely gets excited about a perfectly cut stair stringer, a high-performance house that stands up to the weather, or a self-taught builder who transformed a falling-down farmhouse into something remarkable. That kind of passion is what separates a good video from a great one.
Our new video producer will be responsible for identifying the right video topics for our audience, vetting contributors, and scouting locations before hopping on a plane and returning with the footage needed to produce the best videos in the category. You'll also play a key role in shaping our video strategy going forward.
This is a dream job for the right person. It's also a roll-up-your-sleeves-and-dive-in position. You won't have an assistant or a lighting crew, but you’ll have great gear and will work closely with a smart, passionate staff that is open to your ideas and direction. If this sounds exciting, we want to hear from you. You don’t need to check off every box below, but please don't send a resume without a cover letter. We'll be responding to applicants who tell us why they’re the right fit and what excites them about the role. Bonus points if you do that in a short video...
What you’ll do:
· Develop videos from concept to completion: Work on social shorts, long-form courses, and everything in between, finding contributors and locations, developing scripts, shooting, and editing.
· Help plan the video calendar: Collaborate with the editorial director and executive video producer to plan Fine Homebuilding videos up to a year in advance.
· Cover live events: Join the editors at events like the Fine Homebuilding Summit and the International Builders’ Show to shoot social and newsy editorial videos.
· Assist in managing sponsored videos: Work with advertisers who sponsor our videos, ensuring product integration is accurate and appropriate for our audience.
· Assist with special projects and other brands: Pitch in on one-off projects and work on videos for our sister brands, including Green Building Advisor and Old House Journal.
What you’ll bring to the team:
· Video skills: 1–3 years of experience in video production, including shooting and editing (proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro and Photoshop; familiarity with After Effects or DaVinci Resolve). We want to see examples of your work.
· Passion for the subject matter: Whether you have a degree in architecture, jobsite work experience, or just a passion for homes, you’re enthusiastic about residential design and construction and can speak the language.
· A collaborative mindset: You’re comfortable working on a team, know when to ask for help or feedback, and put the quality of the work above your ego.
· Reliability: You regularly meet deadlines, communicate clearly, and ask for help when needed.
· Photography skills: It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s a strong plus if you can take great still photos or are willing to try.
