Structural Welder (MIG/FCAW)
Description

Perform welding and fabrication of power plant components using MIG (GMAW) and FCAW processes in accordance with blueprints, layouts, and work orders. This role is responsible for producing high-quality welds on structural and mechanical components used in energy systems, ensuring all work meets company standards, engineering specifications, and applicable codes.

Position Responsibilities

  • Review and interpret blueprints, layouts, diagrams, and work orders prior to fabrication and welding 
  • Position, align, and secure workpieces using clamps, jigs, and fixtures 
  • Operate MIG (GMAW) and FCAW welding equipment to join metal components 
  • Set up welding equipment by selecting appropriate electrodes, consumables, and gas/nozzle configurations 
  • Ignite torch or initiate power supply and establish proper arc conditions 
  • Adjust gas flow, amperage, voltage, and polarity to achieve optimal weld performance 
  • Guide welding torch or electrode along weld joints at specified angles and travel speeds 
  • Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions 
  • Perform repairs on cracked, broken, or worn metal components 
  • Fill holes, reinforce structures, and modify metal parts using welding techniques 
  • Inspect completed welds to ensure conformance with specifications and quality standards 
  • Identify and replace consumables such as liners, contact tips, and wire spools as needed 
  • Maintain welding equipment and ensure proper operation of power sources (e.g., Miller and/or Lincoln systems) 
  • Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized work area 
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet production schedules and quality expectations 
  • Support fabrication processes including flame cutting and related metalworking tasks as required 

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent 
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with GMAW (MIG) and FCAW welding processes 
  • Ability to successfully pass a weld test in FCAW (3G position - vertical up) 
  • Weld coupons subject to Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) evaluation and bend testing prior to hire 
  • Experience working with carbon steel plate (A-36, approximately 1/2" thickness) in multiple positions 
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States (no visa sponsorship available) 
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history/background check and pre-employment drug screening 

Desired Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of personal protective equipment (PPE) and welding safety practices 
  • Ability to use measuring and layout tools including tape measure, micrometer, calipers, square, level, angle finder, and weld gauges 
  • Experience operating forklifts safely 
  • Knowledge of safe rigging practices and overhead crane operation 
  • Familiarity with industrial welding power sources (e.g., Miller, Lincoln) 
  • Understanding of welding parameters including amperage, wire speed, and consumable selection 
  • Ability to maintain cost efficiency while ensuring quality and productivity 
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce consistent, high-quality welds
