The Orthopaedic Spine Physician Assistant (PA) works collaboratively with the supervising physician to provide high-quality, patient-centered care across clinic, surgical, and hospital settings. This role supports the full continuum of spine care, including patient evaluation, surgical assistance, and post-operative management, while contributing to efficient workflows and exceptional patient outcomes.

What You’ll Do

Clinic Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive patient evaluations, including medical history and physical examinations 
  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic spine conditions under physician supervision 
  • Develop and implement treatment plans (medications, injections, bracing, therapy referrals) 
  • Order and interpret diagnostic imaging (X-ray, MRI, CT) 
  • Provide patient education on diagnoses, treatment options, and recovery expectations 
  • Perform in-office procedures (injections, wound care, suture/staple removal) 
  • Document patient encounters accurately in the EMR 
  • Coordinate care with physical therapy, imaging, and other ancillary services 

Operating Room Responsibilities:

  • Serve as first or second assist in spine surgeries 
  • Assist with patient positioning, sterile prep, and draping 
  • Provide intraoperative support (retraction, exposure, hemostasis, instrumentation)      
  • Assist with implant placement and wound closure 
  • Collaborate with surgical team to ensure efficient case flow and optimal outcomes 

Post-Operative & Inpatient Responsibilities:

  • Conduct post-operative rounds and monitor recovery 
  • Manage pain control, wound care, and complications 
  • Coordinate discharge planning and follow-up care 

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program 
  • NCCPA certification 
  • Active North Carolina PA license (or eligibility) 
  • BLS certification required (ACLS preferred) 
  • Orthopaedic spine and/or surgical assisting experience strongly preferred 
  • Strong clinical assessment, communication, and teamwork skills 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical and surgical environment
