Summary/Objective
A Laboratory Assistant Regional Lead performs the roles of phlebotomy, specimen processing, point of care testing, provides training, maintains inventory for the department, ensures staff coverage in all regional locations, creates the schedules, and documents any corrective action needed in the department.

- Phlebotomy skills are such that specimens are obtained correctly and specimen integrity is maintained. Responsible for training new employees to ensure phlebotomy competency and training documentation is complete.
- Verifies accurate and correct information on patients and proceeds to accurate labeling of specimens
- Accurate data entry skills in verifying correct patient information, requested tests, and specimen accessioning information into the LIS
- Professional attitude with patients including assistance with patients’ questions and giving instructions on specimen collection and handling
- Processes specimens to achieve maximum accuracy, efficiency, and productivity. Performs point of care testing and demonstrates accurate test result reporting.
- Tracks and maintains records and reports and provides complete and full documentation of any problem or resolution of a problem
- Performs accurate and reproducible results of WAIVED testing as ordered by the physician producing results in a timely manner
- Performs quality control on WAIVED testing and maintains records in the appropriate log
- Participates in Proficiency Testing programs for WAIVED testing
- Responds to questions by physicians and other clinical staff in a timely manner
- Uses available reference materials and telephone support to assure the appropriate handling of tests of an unusual nature
- Maintains a well-stocked, clean, and orderly work environment. Responsible for reviewing inventory and determining supply order to ensure adequacy.
- Adheres to all safety standards in the handling of biohazardous specimens
- Ensures there is proper coverage of lab assistants in all the regional locations
- Documents any corrective action needed and works with the Laboratory Manager to deliver the information
- Creates the schedule for the lab assistants in all the regional locations
- Performs any other miscellaneous duties as assigned

Work Environment & Physical Demands
Lifting – Must be able to lift above shoulder height up to 10 lbs. as needed. In addition, must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. on a daily basis. For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly or cart must be utilized.
Pushing/Pulling – Must be able to push/pull up to 30 lbs. on a daily basis. For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly or cart must be utilized.
Carry weight, lift – Must be able to carry supplies, specimen racks, and bins weighing up to 30 lbs. on a daily basis. For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly or cart must be utilized.
Bending/Twisting/Stooping – Must be able to bend/twist/stoop for entire shift in order to perform phlebotomy, place specimens in refrigerator/freezer, file racks of specimens, and in storing of supplies.
Sitting/Standing – Must be able to constantly stand, bend, and walk for several hours in duration. Sitting is appropriate based on workload volume and work being performed.
Smells – ability to tolerate strong odors when working with patients and disposing of specimens.
Dexterity – Must be able to perform a large amount of repetitive hand movements by utilizing computers and opening/closing specimen containers.
Travel
Based on staffing needs, staff may be required to commute to other regional locations to provide coverage which may also require changing work hours, additional shifts and/or weekends.
Required Education and Experience
High school diploma required along previous phlebotomy experience.
Preferred Education and Experience
A minimum of two years experience as a phlebotomist, Laboratory Assistant, or Laboratory Specimen Processor to include phlebotomy performed on all ages and ability to adapt to multiple computer systems.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
Basic knowledge of medical terminology and data entry skills. Knowledge of specimen collection, specimen requirements, specimen integrity and specimen handling. CPR/BLS Certification.
