GEO 21st Century Charter School at Gary is a part of a network of high-quality charter schools managed by the GEO Foundation. It joins Gary Middle College and GEO Next Generation Academy - Indianapolis in delivering a high-quality learning experience to parents and students in Indiana. GEO 21st Century Charter School is a tuition-free, public charter school that serves students in grades 12-16. Our teachers cultivate critical thinking skills students need to understand how the world works around them. Our dedicated faculty are committed to providing an outstanding education for students each day as they transition from middle school to high school and COLLEGE. Through our partnership with the local community college, our students will be able to take dual credit courses with the opportunity to earn college credit at no cost to the student. Our curriculum and our teaching methods are designed using Core Knowledge, Teach Like a Champion and blended learning model. We are a TAP school!
REPORTS TO/TERM:

Full time, 10 -month position
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS: A high school College and Career Readiness Counselor is required to perform the following duties:
- Respect the integrity, worth, and dignity of students
- Assist students in the areas of academic, career and social/emotional development
- Promote and motivate student achievement
- Create an inviting, exciting, innovative and engaging learning environment that develops student critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Implement College and Career Readiness programming
- Implement the guidance and counseling program using appropriate techniques and models
- Provide guidance to students and parents on academic requirements, scheduling all HS and dual credit/college courses to maintain progress towards graduation and/or degree attainment (including graduation pathways and plans)
- Assist students in understanding personal strengths, weaknesses, interests, values, potentialities, and limitations
- Administer college readiness tests (e.g., ACCUPLACER)
- Coordinate college and career programming, including scheduling college visits, identifying internships and other opportunities
- Assist in long-range goals including assistance in college applications, financial aid, and scholarship processes
- Assist students in acquiring skills and attitudes related to college and career readiness (i.e. interview skills, professional appearances, etc.)
- Participate in and initiate parent conferences as needed
- Continually assess student progress toward mastery of standards and keep students and parents well informed of student progress by collecting and tracking data, providing daily feedback, weekly assessments, and occasional parent/teacher conferences
- Develop effective professional relationships and communicate effectively with other staff members
- Work with staff by providing appropriate information, materials, and assistance in supporting teacher efforts
- Provide crisis intervention support as needed
- Maintain open relationships with community resources, including business, industry, government, and community agencies
- Act as primary local liaison with partner higher education institutions
- Demonstrate knowledge of and make appropriate referrals to community agencies
- Assist in staff recruitment to aid in dual credit/Early College model
- Utilize all computer systems for maintenance of student records
- Manage guidance department personnel (e.g., bus drivers, college readiness counselors)
- Document and maintain reporting and follow-up system for all early college activities
- Maintain complete and accurate student records
- Meet deadlines for submitting accurate reports
- Uphold all GEO Foundation and school policies
- Other duties or tasks necessary to assist students or requested by supervisor
- Dress professionally Maintain high behavioral expectations for all students
- Attend all staff meetings, professional development and attend designated school functions outside of school hours
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s Degree in School Counseling
• Valid Indiana School Counseling License
• Commitment to the mission and goals of GEO Academies
• Knowledge of Indiana Graduation Requirements and College and Career Readiness Programs
• Experience in working with high school students and in reviewing student transcripts, scheduling, & graduation requirements
• Demonstrated success in Guidance Counseling
• Proficient in Microsoft Office operations
• Experience working with high school students in a non-traditional setting and/or an urban environment
