Position Overview

Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara (GIGSB) is seeking a passionate, mission-driven professional to serve as our Literacy Coordinator. You will design and deliver literacy programs that inspire a love of reading in girls ages 5–18, manage our library resources, and build community partnerships that expand access to learning. This is a unique opportunity to shape how young people engage with literacy and to make a lasting impact on girls' educational journeys.


Key Responsibilities


Literacy Programming & Instruction

• Design and deliver engaging, age-appropriate literacy programs, activities, and services for girls ages 5–18, including regular library rotations and themed literacy events for girls and families.

• Implement evidence-based and creative literacy instruction strategies to strengthen reading and writing development across skill levels and support lifelong learning.

• Facilitate learning activities that support literacy development in accordance with Girls Inc. programmatic guidelines.

         -Facilitation of learning activities includes our Elementary Center Library, our Teen Center, off-site Lunchtime Club and community outreach activities. 

• Collaborate with program staff to weave literacy activities into broader programming across the organization.

• Identify and promote print and digital resources that support literacy and education.

• Provide resource materials to support families and caregivers.

• Evaluate program outcomes and adapt programming to meet community needs.


Library Services & Management

• Oversee the daily operations of the library, including cataloging, inventory, and resource management.

• Curate and maintain a diverse, inclusive collection of books and materials that reflect the interests, identities, and needs of our girls.

• Support collection development and recommend materials related to literacy and education.

• Manage the borrowing and return of library materials, maintaining an efficient and welcoming library system.

• Identify and recommend print and digital resources that extend learning opportunities for youth, staff, and families.

• Provide reference, research, and reader advisory services to staff and students.

• Assist youth and staff in locating print, digital, and online information resources.


Community & Family Engagement

• Organize workshops and events for families that promote literacy at home and deepen engagement with Girls Inc. programs.

• Support all family engagement events and activities as needed. 

• Represent GIGSB at community events, outreach activities, and school forums, advocating for literacy.

• In collaboration with the Center Director and Director of Programs and Community Impact, develop and maintain partnerships with local schools, libraries, and community organizations to strengthen and expand program offerings.


Administration & Reporting

• Stay current with research and best practices in literacy education and library management.

• Mentor and support staff in implementing effective literacy strategies across programs.

• Maintain records of program participation and service outcomes.

• Contribute to program evaluation, planning, and the development of potential funding opportunities.

• Ensure compliance with library policies, organizational procedures, and safety guidelines.


Requirements

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Education, Library Science, Literacy, or a related field.

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in literacy education, library management, or a related role.

• Bilingual (English/Spanish) REQUIRED

• Strong understanding of literacy development, interventions, and instructional strategies for children and adolescents.

• Experience working with diverse populations and understanding of culturally responsive teaching practices.

• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

• Passionate about empowering girls and promoting literacy.


Salary Description
$24.00 - $28.00 per hour
