Student - Writing Tutor

Occupational Summary:

The responsibility of a Writing Tutor is to offer in-person support to Newman students. Tutors report to the Director of Student Success who provides supervision, scheduling, and strategies for tutoring. Tutors must commit to continued professional development for the entirety of the semester. The job will begin in Fall 2026.

Subject Tutors should not only be proficient in their subject area but also patient, empathetic, and have the ability to listen and strategize. A goal of many sessions will be to help a student bridge the gap between confusion and comprehension. Tutors assist students in their development of foundational knowledge to build strong academic careers.

Requirements

 

Subject Tutor Qualifications:

  1. Proficiency in writing, receiving A’s in 2XXX-level (or higher) courses.
  2. Must be recommended by a Newman faculty member.
  3. Must be reliable and possess a strong work ethic.
  4. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  5. Must have adequate computer skills.
  6. Must be currently enrolled as a full-time Newman University student.
  7. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

  1. Cover letter
  2. Faculty recommendation (Newman faculty who teaches this subject)
  3. Most recent Newman transcripts (unofficial is okay)
  4. Resume
  5. Hiring interview with the Direct of Student Success

Additional Information:

Subject Tutors will make up to $13.00/hour and can work a maximum of 140 hours per semester (approximately 10 hours per week).
