Description

The Rail Operations Lead reports to the Rail Supervisor and is responsible for leading and training rail associates while ensuring their productivity and safety. This role oversees the safe movement of railcars in and out of the rail yard, ensuring adherence to all safety requirements. The Rail Lead maintains tracks, switches, bump stumps, and yard equipment, while effectively communicating with the team and management to promptly resolve operational issues.

Summary of Essential Job Functions

  • Maintain the safety of the rail crew and rail yard, ensuring strict compliance with safety protocols.
  • Conduct daily toolbox meetings and provide ongoing training to rail associates.
  • Schedule rail associates and control team overtime to optimize efficiency.
  • Oversee inbound and outbound movement of railcars, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Navigate external rail service provider websites and communication channels.
  • Maintain continuous communication with Quantix packaging line leads to limit downtime.
  • Coordinate with the Rail Supervisor and Operations Manager regarding production updates and downtime.
  • Ensure completion of necessary paperwork and safety checks.
  • Oversee the efficient and accurate assembly of rail blocks for daily operations.
  • Update and maintain rail sheets to track railcar locations within the yard.
Requirements

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • High School Diploma required; Associate’s Degree preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience working in a rail yard.
  • Experience operating a locomotive and/or Rail Mobile equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, including coordination across multiple departments.
  • Knowledge of safe working practices within a rail yard environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Highly detail-oriented, with strong organizational and follow-up skills.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in a rail yard.
  • Proven ability to run and maintain a locomotive and/or track mobile.
  • Strong planning and coordination skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 55 lbs frequently.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions (heat, cold, humidity, etc.).
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Occasional sitting while working on a computer.
