STEAM Teacher & Department Chair
CATS Academy Boston is in search of a STEAM Teacher and Department Chair who excels in hands-on learning, creative problem-solving, and working closely with both students and colleagues. This role is a blend of teaching, mentoring, and helping shape the direction of our Science, Technology & Engineering programs in a friendly, collaborative boarding school community.
What You’ll Teach
You’ll lead engaging, project-based classes in Robotics, Electronics, 2D/3D Design, AI Fundamentals, and Data Science. You will have access to all curriculum and materials, and you’ll have the support of an experienced mentor teacher as you get settled.
You’ll also join our small but mighty coaching team for the First Tech Challenge Robotics program, guiding students as they design, build, and code their competition robot.
What You’ll Do as Department Chair
As the leader of the department, you’ll help keep the team connected and growing. Tasks include running department meetings, mentoring new teachers, supporting curriculum alignment, and helping with hiring. You’ll also manage departmental supplies and budgets, coordinate schedules, and collaborate with the Dean of Academics on long-term planning.
Daily Life in the Role
- Teach hands-on STEAM classes that encourage creativity and confidence.
- Maintain classroom technology, including a Mac computer lab, 3D printers, and a laser cutter.
- Keep course materials updated in the LMS and provide thoughtful feedback to students.
- Coach robotics students and attend a few weekend competitions each semester.
- Support colleagues through observations, feedback, and professional conversations.
- Help evaluate new students and recommend appropriate course placements.
- Participate in school-wide initiatives, leadership meetings, and professional development.
- Contribute to residential life with one short dorm shift per semester and one weekend activity.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT
- Bachelor’s degree in the relevant subject area required; Master’s degree preferred. Massachusetts teaching license not required but preferred.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain) preferred.
EXPERIENCE AND ESSENTIAL SKILLS
- Several years of teaching experience—ideally in an independent or boarding school.
- Experience working with international students is a big plus.
- Comfort with makerspace tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, and Arduino microcontrollers.
- Familiarity with software such as Fusion 360, TinkerCAD, Adobe Illustrator, and Arduino IDE.
- Strong communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and a genuine love of working with students.
- Flexibility and enthusiasm for the unique rhythm of boarding school life.
