The Special Assets Officer is responsible for managing and resolving a portfolio of adversely classified and non-performing commercial loans, with a primary focus on commercial real estate (CRE) and business lending relationships. This role leads all aspects of loan workouts, including restructuring, enforcement, collateral liquidation, and guarantor recovery, with the objective of minimizing loss and maximizing recovery to the Bank.
This position requires deep expertise in distressed assets, strong credit judgment, and hands-on experience navigating foreclosure, repossession, and legal recovery processes—particularly within Texas.
• Manage a portfolio of criticized, classified, and non-performing commercial loans, with emphasis on CRE and income-producing properties
• Develop and execute asset resolution strategies, including:
o Loan restructures and modifications
o Forbearance agreements
o Deeds in lieu of foreclosure
o Note sales and discounted payoffs
• Lead and oversee foreclosure processes, UCC actions, and repossession of commercial collateral
• Coordinate with internal and external legal counsel on litigation, bankruptcy, and enforcement actions
• Pursue recovery from guarantors, including negotiation, settlement, and legal enforcement
• Evaluate collateral positions, including real estate, business assets, and secondary sources of repayment
• Analyze borrower financials, global cash flow, rent rolls, and guarantor capacity to inform strategy
• Prepare risk ratings, impairment analyses, and charge-off recommendations in accordance with regulatory guidance
• Present action plans, status updates, and risk exposure to senior management and credit committees
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, internal policies, and documentation standards
• Maintain detailed records of collection efforts, legal proceedings, and borrower communications
• Minimum 5+ years of direct experience in:
o Commercial loan collections
o Special assets/workout management
o Foreclosure and repossession of commercial assets
• Strong working knowledge of:
o Commercial real estate lending and valuation
o Distressed asset resolution strategies
o Guarantor enforcement and recovery practices
• Demonstrated experience managing complex loan workouts from initial default through resolution
• Experience working with legal counsel on bankruptcy, foreclosure, and litigation matters
