Head of Data and Machine Learning
Fully Remote WA Product Management
Job Type
Full-time
Description

Join the team shaping the future of healthcare! Medbridge is a dynamic software-as-a-service company working with the country’s largest healthcare providers to build technology solutions that help patients get better faster, while decreasing the overall cost of care. Our Product team is looking for an enthusiastic Head of Data and Machine Learning  to join us!

We hire in the following states: AZ, CO, CA, FL, ID, GA, IL, NH, KS, MA, MI, MN, NC, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI.

As a Head of Data and Machine Learning, you will own Medbridge's most important technical bet: turning the world's richest proprietary therapeutic care dataset into AI that makes every clinician more effective and every patient more likely to recover. You will define and lead the technical strategy for our core AI systems infrastructure that powers them.

Your main responsibility is to deeply understand Medbridge’s vast collection of digital patient care data — encompassing adherence metrics, patient-reported outcomes (PROs), home exercise program (HEP) completion rates, clinical feedback, motion capture assessments, remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) data, and structured/unstructured outcomes across millions of assigned programs — and to build and execute the company's overarching data science and AI strategy.

Leveraging this rich, proprietary dataset, you will lead the development of AI agents and advanced AI applications that empower healthcare professionals and patients to gain deeper insights into clinical outcomes and patient feedback, optimize digital care and rehabilitation programs, and drive impactful, data-informed decisions in therapy, engagement, and hybrid care delivery.

Why Medbridge:

Medbridge is a leading provider of healthcare education and digital patient care software, serving clinicians, healthcare organizations, and patients by transforming how providers deliver education, engagement, and care. With evidence-based continuing education and tools like home exercise programs, digital care pathways, remote therapeutic monitoring, patient-reported outcomes, and motion capture technology, Medbridge helps healthcare professionals reach more patients, improve adherence, elevate outcomes, and practice at the top of their licenses.  Our award-winning platform supports disciplines including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and more—empowering better care across outpatient, home health, hospitals, and hybrid settings.

We offer:

  • A work-hard, have-fun environment with smart, curious people who thrive on hard problems
  • A values-driven culture centered on connection, collaboration, and co-creation
  • A diverse, experienced, and friendly team that will welcome, support, and challenge you

What you'll do

  • Own the proprietary model flywheel. Medbridge holds 90M+ assigned programs, 15M+ care episodes, longitudinal adherence time-series, PROs, RTM signals, and motion capture data that no competitor can replicate. Your primary mandate is to turn this dataset into a proprietary therapeutic AI model that compounds in value with every patient episode, making our AI advantage mathematically impossible to close.
  • Lead AI product delivery across all AI bets. Drive the design, development, deployment, and continuous improvement of the models and systems that power the Clinical Copilot (next-best-action, pathway recommendations, patient summarization), the Outcomes Intelligence Platform (predictive risk flagging, adherence modeling, value-based care reporting), and the Intelligent Learning Engine (personalized point-of-care education surfacing).
  • Define and execute the AI/ ML technical roadmap. Partner with Product and Content to translate clinical and product priorities into a sequenced, feasible AI roadmap. Own build vs. fine-tune vs. prompt decisions. Determine when general-purpose LLMs are sufficient and when proprietary model development is warranted.
  • Establish trust-by-design as a non-negotiable standard. Every model and AI feature ships with transparency, auditability, and the clinician always in the loop. Own the clinical AI safety and quality framework, including evaluation methodology, guardrails, human oversight design, and HIPAA-compliant data handling alongside Legal.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment. Work closely with product, engineering, clinical, and client teams to prioritize high-impact AI initiatives, assess feasibility, and ensure AI is embedded in workflows rather than bolted on. Communicate complex technical strategy clearly to executives, clinicians, and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Stay at the frontier. Continuously evaluate emerging developments in LLMs, agentic systems, and clinical AI. Translate them into practical advantages for Medbridge's platform and patients  not just as experiments, but as shipped, measurable improvements.

What are we looking for

  • 8+ years in machine learning engineering, AI research, or applied ML, with at least 3–5 years in a technical leadership or people-management role
  • Proven track record of shipping AI/ML  systems in production — not just building models, but owning reliability, performance, and clinical or business impact end-to-end
  •  Experience with complex, real-world datasets (healthcare a plus.)
  • A master's degree or PhD in computer science, machine learning, or a related field — or equivalent experience that demonstrates the same depth

Technical depth

  • Machine learning and modeling: Advanced Python, classical and deep learning, NLP with transformers (especially for clinical text), time-series modeling, multimodal inputs, statistical rigor, training and evaluation frameworks.
  • LLM and agentic systems: Prompt engineering, fine-tuning open-source LLMs, RAG architectures, agentic frameworks (LangChain/LangGraph), function calling, token/cost management, guardrails, evaluation frameworks, PyTorch, embedding models.
  • Cloud and data platform: Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure (Function Apps, Data Factory, AI Foundry) and Snowflake; secure, scalable, HIPAA-compliant data processing.

Leadership and mindset

  • Builder mentality: you want to create something that didn't exist before, not manage a function that already runs
  • Clinical-first instinct: you ask "does this drive a measurable clinical outcome?" before "can we build this?"
  • Strong communicator across audiences — from ML engineers to clinicians to the executive team
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, fast iteration, and high stakes
  • The confidence to challenge assumptions and advocate for the right technical approach, even when it's not the easy one

What success looks like in one year.

  • Proprietary therapeutic AI model training initiated on the longitudinal dataset
  • Predictive risk flagging for non-adherence live and driving admin action
  • ML/Data Science support hired, onboarded, and operating with strong technical culture
  • Clinical AI safety and evaluation framework in place across all shipped features
  • A compounding data flywheel that gets harder for competitors to close with every passing month
