Nature of Work:

The Wellness Transportation Specialist is responsible for safely transporting clients to TIC's health services appointments. Delivers medication to homebound patients and provides educational activities. Responsible for accuracy, efficiency and retrieval of processed data. The Transportation Specialist provides Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) services to ensure patient access to healthcare appointments. This position focuses on reducing transportation barriers, improving appointment adherence, and decreasing no-show rates through patient education outreach, and follow-up. The Wellness Transportation Specialist supports care coordination efforts and participates in health promotion, health education, and outreach activities serving the Tucson urban American Indian community.
Essential Functions:
- Transportation: Provides safe, timely, and courteous transportation services to multiple clients daily, including daily round trips to the Tucson Indian Center Health Services Clinic.
- Safety: Ensures safety of transportation of all passengers, including always requiring appropriate safety restraints such as seat belts, car seats or booster seats; no driver cellphone usage while driving; coordination of regular maintenance of company vehicles; properly loading and unloading clients; ensuring clients enter appropriate building, etc.
- Deliveries: Picks up and delivers food boxes, diapers, and other related items. Loading and unloading items up to 30 lbs.
- Phone: Provides prompt and courteous follow-up to multiple daily phone calls and voicemails from patients regarding transportation services.
- Coordination: Coordinates patient transportation and orders with the Health Services team, Community Health Representatives.
- Maintenance: Ensures vehicles are well maintained and cleaned, including conducting monthly safety and maintenance checks of all company vehicles.
- Reports: Submits required reports in an accurate and timely manner, especially in regard to safety and maintenance checks and services provided.
- Data entry: Enters into the electronic records system, all encounters and billing entries, for all users of transportation-related services.
- Logs: Accurately maintains all mileage/ destination logs and submits them monthly to the Finance Director.
- Assist patients with appointment reminders, transportation scheduling, and coordination to reduce missed appointments and no-show rates.
- Conduct follow-up outreach with patients who miss appointments to reschedule and assess transportation needs.
- Ensure compliance with ADHS, organizational, and program policies related to nonĀ emergency medical transportation services.
- Complete required trainings, certifications, and documentation necessary for NEMT service delivery.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and organizational privacy standards.
- Perform other duties as requested or assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Ability:
- Organizational skills sufficient to maintain paper and/or electronic charting system accurately and expeditiously.
- Knowledge of and application of medical terminology, medical records, concepts, policies and procedures.
- Knowledge and ability to work with and maintain an electronic health record system.
- Ability to work with confidential and sensitive documents, and information in a professional manner.
- Ability to maintain high standards of client confidentiality.
- Demonstrated skills in word processing, data entry, and spreadsheet procedures.
- Ability to relate well with the public by exhibiting patience, courtesy, tact, sensitivity, and resourcefulness; especially in dealing with patients in difficult situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in written format.
- Ability to accomplish work assignments independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to maintain personal objectivity.
- Ability to type a minimum of 55 words per minute.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Ability:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (Associate's Degree preferred); Or a minimum of two (2) years of related experience in a fast-paced environment.
- Customer service, records management, and data entry experience
Additional Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License
- Must pass Driver Insurance Carrier's requirements
- Must obtain a HIPAA certification within 2 weeks of hire.
- Must obtain certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid within 3 months of hire.
- Must pass Arizona DPS Fingerprint Clearance (Class I & II)
- Must pass and submit to periodic/random drug testing
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to communicable disease & bloodborne pathogens, unpredictable environmental conditions, physical requirements.
- Exposure to communicable diseases such as COVID-19 or bloodborne pathogens is a risk of this position.
- Unpredictable environmental conditions range from working in a climate-controlled office/clinic setting to working in a patient's home, outside, in extreme temperatures, or in spaces with poor ventilation.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and drive in the Tucson Urban area.
- The employee is occasionally required to sit; balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
