Maintenance Technician III
Description

Summary 

The Maintenance Technician III is a top-level technical role responsible for advanced equipment and facility maintenance with a high degree of technical expertise, independence, and accountability. This position serves as a subject-matter expert in complex mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and control systems; chemical process lines; PLC-controlled equipment; and boiler operations, with emphasis on metal finishing and coating applications.


This position independently diagnoses and resolves complex failures, leads advanced corrective and preventive maintenance activities, and plays a key role in improving equipment reliability and overall operational performance. This role also provides technical leadership and hands-on mentoring to Maintenance Technician I and II employees, supports root cause analysis efforts, and drives continuous improvement initiatives across the maintenance organization. 


Key Accountabilities 

  1. Improve equipment uptime, reliability, and operational performance through advanced troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and effective corrective actions. 
  2. Serve as the technical leader for maintenance by mentoring technicians, supporting skill development, and influencing repair and reliability decisions. 
  3. Ensure safe, compliant, and efficient maintenance operations aligned with organizational goals for safety, quality, cost, and delivery. 


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead by example in safety, housekeeping, and continuous improvement activities such as 5S and Kaizen
  • Follow lockout/tagout and energy control procedures and ensure compliance during maintenance activities
  • Perform advanced equipment, facility, and safety inspections with accurate documentation
  • Independently perform complex PM tasks, including advanced adjustments and component replacements
  • Complete cleaning, lubrication, inspection, and adjustment tasks to resolve issues across systems
  • Enter detailed work orders, diagnostics, and repair activities into the maintenance management system
  • Perform advanced mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic repairs with minimal supervision
  • Diagnose complex issues and lead root cause analysis to prevent recurrence
  • Plan and execute corrective actions to restore equipment performance and reliability
  • Use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic meters, and advanced test equipment safely and effectively
  • Respond to emergency and unscheduled maintenance events 
  • Read and interpret complex manuals, diagrams, schematics, and technical drawings
  • Provide clear technical updates and repair summaries tailored to production or leadership
  • Accurately document parts usage, failure modes, shortages, or discrepancies in the CMMS
  • Train, mentor, and provide hands-on technical guidance to Maintenance Technician I and II employees
  • Develop expertise on specialized equipment and proactively share technical knowledge
  • Collaborate professionally with team members, vendors, and other departments
  • Perform other related duties as assigned based on business needs
  • Set the standard for cleanliness and organization of maintenance tools, carts, and parts areas
  • Ability to perform confined space maintenance activities on an infrequent basis
  • Overtime and on-call work as required


Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent; technical certifications preferred
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or a current green card
  • 5–8+ years of maintenance experience or equivalent advanced training
  • Must have on-call availability 
  • Plumbing and pumping systems experience
  • Strong mechanical fundamentals including motors, bearings, and power transmission 
  • Boiler experience preferred (licensed or able to obtain) 
  • Commitment to continuing education and technical skill development 
  • Electrical system proficiency including 480V 3-phase, single phase, and low-voltage controls
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems
  • Experience with industrial DC power supply systems
  • Ability to communicate clearly across teams, navigate conflict, and build productive working relationships
  • Working knowledge of PLCs, automation, instrumentation, boilers, and controls
  • Thorough understanding of pumps, piping, valves, materials, and chemical compatibility
  • Proficient computer skills for Microsoft Office Suite, CMMS, documentation, and communication
  • Strong organizational and workload-balancing skills
  • Ability to interpret complex technical documents, schematics, and engineering drawings
  • Strong communication skills and ability to guide, train, and support peers
  • Dependable, punctual, and flexible with work hours as needed
  • Demonstrated initiative, teamwork, technical leadership, and continuous improvement mindset
  • Competent technical writing skills for authoring preventative maintenance plans and SOPs
  • A strong understanding of chemical handling and safety is preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Lift up to 50 lbs on a continuous basis and up to 70 lbs periodically 
  • Ability to use hand tools using fine dexterity and precision
  • Stand, sit or walk for 8 to 10 hours as business requires
  • Bending and walking with up to 50 lbs throughout workday 
  • Ability to work in an environment with odors and high decibel sounds 
  • Able to climb a ladder up to a 20’ elevation

Must be available to work Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm and overtime as business requires. This position also includes the responsibility of being on a rotating on-call schedule. This position will remain open until filled.
