Job Title:  Accountant I

Department:  Finance

Reports to:  Accounting Supervisor

  

Position Summary:

The Accountant I position is primarily responsible for the accurate preparation and reconciliation of financial information in support of New Mexico Mutual Group and its affiliates. This position performs routine accounting duties under established procedures and supervision, supports the month-end and regulatory close processes, and assists with audits and internal reporting. The Accountant I role is developmental in nature and designed to build a strong foundation in statutory accounting.

        

Essential Functions: 

  • Prepare or assist with month-end, quarter-end , and year- end close processes.
  • Assist in preparation of quarterly and annual state and regulatory filings.
  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, including preparation of bank account reconciliations. Identify discrepancies and escalate to Supervisor as needed.
  • Prepare and enter monthly general ledger entries.
  • Provide assistance during the annual audit process by collecting supporting documentation and schedules. 
  • Serve as the primary backup for check printing and Accounts Receivable functions.
  • Cross train with department members in order to act as backup for key accounting duties.
  • Participate in process improvement and reporting efficiency initiatives.
  • Support the Finance department with other duties and projects as assigned.


Job Qualifications:

Education: 

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Additional experience will substitute for degree requirement. 


Experience: 

Zero to two years of related experience.


Required Skills/Specialized Knowledge:

  • Fundamental knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Statutory Accounting Principles. 
  • Analytical thinking and attention to detail
  • Ability to follow documented procedures and meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assignments and projects effectively.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships across teams.


Demonstrated proficiency in:

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • General ledger software
