Job Summary
The Human Resources Specialist serves as a key contributor to the Human Resources department, providing broad-based HR support across multiple functional areas including benefits administration, leave management, recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement, training coordination, and compliance. Reporting to the Human Resources Manager and partnering closely with the Human Resources Generalist, this role also supports the Chief Human Resources Officer in advancing the department’s strategic and operational priorities.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is a member of Feeding America – the largest charitable domestic
hunger-relief organization in the United States. Second Harvest Food Bank secures and distributes food and grocery
products to more than 800 feeding partners throughout Central Florida. With the help of food and financial
donors, volunteers and a caring, committed community, the food bank distributes 300,000 meals every day to a seven-county
service area, which includes Brevard, Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia. Feeding neighbors

Department Overview
Second Harvest Food Bank’s Human Resources Department supports the needs of employees and managers. We are responsible for Recruitment, Learning and Development, Compensation, Benefits, Labor and Compliance, Employee Wellness, Culture/Employee Engagement, Safety, Employee Relations, and Performance Management. We collaborate with all departments throughout the organization to address all of their unique employee and manager needs. Our goal is to make sure that employees within the organization have a safe and welcoming environment in which to work, learn, develop, and grow, all while driving and delivering the business needs of the organization.
Travel Requirements
Ability to travel as needed within the seven-county service area

Monday – Friday, 8:30 A.M. – 5:00 P.M., Business, hours some flexibility needed
Job Responsibilities
Benefits and Leave Administration
- Serve as a first-line resource for employees regarding benefits, FMLA, ADA accommodations, and Workers’ Compensation inquiries, escalating complex matters to the Human Resources Manager or Generalist as appropriate
- Coordinate and support annual open enrollment, new hire benefit enrollment, and qualifying life event changes
- Conduct monthly audits of benefit deductions and partner with payroll to ensure accuracy
- Track and manage leave cases, ensuring proper documentation, timely communication, and compliance with applicable regulations
Recruitment and Onboarding
- Partner with the Human Resources Generalist to support full-cycle recruitment activities
- Coordinate interview logistics and candidate communications, and follow up with hiring teams to ensure evaluations are completed in a timely manner
- Represent the organization at job fairs and other recruiting events
- Initiate and monitor background checks and drug screenings through completion
- Lead the planning and execution of new hire onboarding and orientation, ensuring a welcoming, well-organized, and consistent experience
- Launch onboarding in the HRIS, complete employer tasks, and coordinate with payroll to ensure smooth new hire transitions
HRIS, Records, and Compliance
- Maintain employee data integrity in the Human Resources Information System (Paylocity), including new hires, changes, terminations, and document uploads to employee files
- Create and maintain badge credentialing software
- Process terminations and ensure proper offboarding documentation and system updates
- Support federal and state compliance reporting (OSHA, EEOC, OFCCP) and assist with department compliance tracking and audit readiness
Training, Development, and Engagement
- Coordinate logistics, materials, and scheduling for training and development programs, and support the build-out of training schedules
- Support efforts and processes for employee engagement and feedback systems
- Lead the execution of wellness initiatives, including planning monthly events, tracking participation, and reporting outcomes
Department Operations and Communications
- Maintain the Human Resources calendar for department meetings, orientations, trainings, and performance cycles
- Draft and disperse department memos and internal communications on behalf of HR leadership
- Contribute to process improvement efforts to better meet department and organizational needs
- Work closely with Executive assistant to support department administrative needs
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of three years of directly related Human Resources experience
- Working knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations, including FMLA, ADA, FLSA, EEO, and OSHA
- Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
- Knowledge of industry standards, regulations and compliance requirements
- Awareness of emerging trends, advancements, and innovations in the field.
- Proficiency in tools, systems, or software related to the role (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Accounting software)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to explain information to various audiences and stakeholders
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy and minimize errors
- Understanding of how to collect, analyze, and interpret relevant data
- Ability to use tools and methodologies for analyzing and resolving challenges
- Ability to break down problems to find actionable solutions
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and/or projects in a timely and efficient manner
- Ability to effectively collaborate with various teams and stakeholders
- Ability to take ownership of tasks and drive results with minimal supervision
Desired but not required experience
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business, or a related field
- HRCI (a PHR or PHR) or SHRM (SHRM-CP) professional certification
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
