Essential Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrate advanced comprehension of ophthalmic assistant skills as outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)
     
  • Possess a basic understanding of optics and the ability to perform refractometry
     
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of optics, refraction, and contact lenses
     
  • Maintain strong attention to detail and accuracy when performing diagnostic testing
     
  • Demonstrate strong computer literacy and comfort working with EMR systems
     

What You’ll Do

As a Refractive Technician, you will play an important role in supporting physicians and ensuring a smooth patient experience.

Responsibilities include:

  • Gathering patient medical histories
     
  • Performing patient work-ups and pre-testing
     
  • Measuring visual acuity and performing pupil assessments
     
  • Conducting diagnostic testing such as applanation tonometry, OCT, corneal topography, and keratometry
     
  • Performing manual refractions and assisting with contact lens evaluations
     
  • Accurately scribing for physicians during patient exams
     
  • Supporting physicians and clinical staff to maintain efficient patient flow
Requirements

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required  
  • Strong computer and data entry skills  
  • One year of medical or ophthalmic office experience preferred  
  • COA or COT certification preferred, but not required for otherwise qualified candidates  
  • Excellent communication skills and a patient-first mindset
