Essential Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrate advanced comprehension of ophthalmic assistant skills as outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)
- Possess a basic understanding of optics and the ability to perform refractometry
- Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of optics, refraction, and contact lenses
- Maintain strong attention to detail and accuracy when performing diagnostic testing
- Demonstrate strong computer literacy and comfort working with EMR systems
What You’ll Do
As a Refractive Technician, you will play an important role in supporting physicians and ensuring a smooth patient experience.
Responsibilities include:
- Gathering patient medical histories
- Performing patient work-ups and pre-testing
- Measuring visual acuity and performing pupil assessments
- Conducting diagnostic testing such as applanation tonometry, OCT, corneal topography, and keratometry
- Performing manual refractions and assisting with contact lens evaluations
- Accurately scribing for physicians during patient exams
- Supporting physicians and clinical staff to maintain efficient patient flow
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Strong computer and data entry skills
- One year of medical or ophthalmic office experience preferred
- COA or COT certification preferred, but not required for otherwise qualified candidates
- Excellent communication skills and a patient-first mindset
