Technical Accounting Manager

Description

The Technical Accounting Manager will report to the Financial Reporting Senior Manager and will be responsible for researching, documenting, and implementing technical accounting conclusions. The person in this role will partner with Accounting, Finance, Tax, Treasury, Legal, Commercial, Operations, external technical specialists, and auditors to convert complex transactions into clear accounting conclusions, journal entries, controls, and reporting support.


The ideal candidate will be comfortable building and improving processes while also executing with precision. Fervo is scaling rapidly, so this role requires strong ownership, crisp communication, a controls mindset, and the ability to partner effectively across Accounting, Finance, Operations, Legal, Tax, Treasury, Commercial, and external advisors.

Responsibilities

 Technical Accounting Research and Documentation 

  • Prepare technical accounting memos and position papers for complex matters under US GAAP, including debt, warrants, stock compensation, derivatives, leases, impairment, going concern, tax equity and consolidation matters
  • Review contracts for embedded derivatives or leases
  • Oversee accounting for leases in accordance with ASC 842, including geothermal leases
  • Partner with Structured Finance, Operations, Legal, Commercial, Tax, and Treasury to proactively review proposed contracts and transactions and provide guidance on best practices and risk mitigation
  •  Support accounting assessments for embedded derivatives in debt facilities, hedge accounting, PPAs, structured energy transactions, and other commercial arrangements
  • Evaluate accounting implications of tax equity structures, HLBV accounting, project finance agreements, and entity-level reporting requirements
  • Maintain clear, audit-ready support that documents purpose, scope, authoritative guidance, inputs, assumptions, conclusions, controls, and reviewer sign-off

 Valuation, External Advisor and Audit Coordination 

  • Coordinate with external valuation specialists for stock-based compensation, warrants, embedded derivatives, NCI remeasurements, and fair value analyses
  • Own completeness and accuracy of data provided to external advisors and auditors
  • Manage technical accounting PBCs, auditor questions, and review comments through resolution
  • Reduce dependency on external advisors for recurring technical matters by building internal templates, playbooks, and repeatable review procedures

 Operationalization and Controls 

  • Translate technical accounting conclusions into journal entries, close procedures, disclosure support, and control activities
  • Partner with Financial Reporting on 10-Q, 10-K, standalone financial statement, and disclosure support for complex areas
  • Identify automation and standardization opportunities for recurring technical accounting workstreams

Qualifications


Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  •  7+ years of progressive accounting experience with meaningful technical accounting research exposure
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP and ability to research, document, and defend accounting conclusions
  • Experience preparing or reviewing technical accounting memos and audit-ready documentation
  •  Ability to work cross-functionally with Legal, Finance, Tax, Treasury, Operations, Commercial, external advisors, and auditors
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort working with complex agreements, financial models, valuations, and supporting data
  • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple high-priority technical matters under tight reporting timelines

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA strongly preferred
  • Big Four technical accounting, audit, advisory, national office, or transaction accounting experience
  • Experience with stock compensation, fair value, debt and warrants, derivatives, ASC 842 leases, tax equity, consolidations, or impairment analyses
  • Experience in energy, renewable power, infrastructure, project finance, or high-growth public-company environments
  • SOX readiness, SEC reporting, or IPO readiness experience

Location


 Fervo Energy has offices in Houston, TX, Golden, CO, Reno, NV, Oakland, CA, and Salt Lake City, UT. This position will be eligible for some hybrid work flexibility, but regular in-office presence at our Houston Office will be required.
